Older MMORPGs Continue to Thrive
Despite the slew of new MMO launches over the years, it seems like a lot of older MMORPGs are still dominating the scene. Plenty of newer MMORPGs launched in the last few years, like Archlord 2 and Continent of the Ninth Seal, but they don't have nearly the playerbase as some older games. A Game like MapleStory from Nexon for example, launched in the U.S. in 2005, but still remains relevant today with a fairly large playerbase. Knight Online from NTTGame launched in 2004, but still has a huge playerbase – so huge in fact that nearly every server is at full capacity. Silkroad Online is the same way – it's old, but remains one of the more popular free to play MMORPGs.

So how is it that these older games continue to perform so well while newer titles seem to flounder? It seems like every new MMORPG that launches quickly dies down, but so many older games continue to thrive despite being outdated. I think the main reason for these older games to continue to thrive is the nostalgia factor. People are stubborn and tend to stick with the games they know best. I'm no exception – I still go back to playing Ultima Online and Ragnarok Online every once in a while, despite these games being archaic by today's standards.

There are a lot of exciting new MMORPGs on the horizon (Tree of Savior, Blade & Soul, and SkyForge possibly), but who knows if these will even be successful? Who knows if these games will even be around in 3 years time? Most new MMORPGs quickly fizzle out after launch and quickly disappear into oblivion. Know which games will almost surely still continue to exist in the enxt 2 years? 5 years? Games like Ragnarok Online, Tibia, MapleStory, and all those really old titles that have already survived the test of time. Even some of the oldest MMORPGs are still around today.
So, do you play any older MMORPGs? If so, which ones? As I mentioned earlier, I still play Ragnarok and Ultima Online on occasion.
