Guild Wars 2 Free-To-Play Confirmed At PAX

As you can see at this website, the one linked in the trailer IGN leaked, Guild Wars 2's base game is now free-to-play. Yes, the entire base game, if what was heard in the stream is correct, and it is free effective immediately. In the stream, it was said that they are making this move because they believe in the buy-to-play model and they believe in making their business model is as simple as possible, requiring only a single purchase in order to keep up with your friends. What this means for Heart of Thorns content in the future is unknown as of this time.

Play Guild Wars 2 For Free

There will, of course, be restrictions. While there is not yet a list of said restrictions on the official free-to-play page, Here are the restrictions that were mentioned in the stream.

  • No map-wide chat.
  • Can only start a brand new whisper conversation once every 30 seconds.
  • Can only trade commonly traded items.
  • No mail usage.
  • You have to reach level 60 before you can partake in WvW.

Update: The full list of restrictions can be found here. The most important to note is that Masteries will be available only to those who own Heart of Thorns. Free players will also be limited to two character slots.

Many are already lamenting the announcement and demanding refunds. Personally, I think this was, indeed, a natural progression following the announcement that the base game would be free with Heart of Thorns. Heart of Thorns content and all content released after it will be restricted to Heart of Thorns owners, as well.

How do you feel about this announcement?
