In a strange turn of fate Jagex, the company behind the Runescape franchise, has been sold to Chinese mining company Shandong Hongda for $300 million, according to the Financial Times. Yup. An iron ore mining company has purchased the makers of an MMORPG.

It seems that investing in the UK based Jagex is a better long-term investment than picking away at iron in dusty mines. Or maybe the Chinese company needs to learn a thing or two from hardcore miners in Runescape.

Jagex has yet to comment but we will update this post as information is released.

Update: Jagex sent the following statement to MassivelyOP:

“Jagex has entered into a non-exclusive, non-binding arrangement for a potential acquisition. The negotiations surrounding the acquisition are ongoing and it remains very much business as usual for the Company.”
