Jagex was initially used as Andrew and Paul Gower’s trading name for their small Java-game company in 1991. They started work on Runescape, their flagship MMORPG, that same year which was released in January 2001. In December 2001, Andrew and Paul Gower along with Constant Tedder launched the company in its current form with Tedder at the helm as CEO. In just a year after RuneScape’s release the game had over 1 million free registered users but the lack of advertisers pushed the company to create a paid version of the game with extra features. The paid version was released in February 2002 and gained 5,000 subscribers in the first week alone which made the game one of the largest pay-to-play Java games in the world at the time. By May 04, 2007 RuneScape had more than 6 million active free accounts and over a million active pay-to-play subscribers. The game also earned a spot in the Guiness World Record Books as the Most Popular Free-to-Play MMO in 2008, 2009, and 2010. The huge popularity of RuneScape resulted in dramatic improvements in the company which went from 29 employees in 2003 to more than 480 employees in 2015. Aside from being a world record holder, Spacetime Studios has also received numerous awards including UK Developer of the Year in the 2009 and Golden Joystick Awards 29^th Most Successful Game Studios in the World by Develop Magazine in the same year. The company was also recognized as one of the Sunday Time’s 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2007 and 2008, and Business of the Year in the 2010 Cambridge News Business Excellence Awards.
