Dragon's Prophet Review

By, Marc Marasigan

Dragon’s Prophet is a free-to-play fantasy-themed 3D MMORPG from the Taiwanese game developer Runewaker Entertainment, known for Runes of Magic, and published in North America by Daybreak Game Company, previously known as Sony Online Entertainment. The game went into open-beta on May 30, 2013 and was officially launched in North America on September 23, 2013. The game has relaunched through Gamigo as "Savage Hunt - Dragon's Prophet" in December, 2017.

Dragon’s Prophet is set in the medieval fantasy world of Auratia, a world created by Morgath, the ancient leader of the dragons and populated by the Osira, a race of humans created by The Guardian, one of Morgath’s successors who inherited his wisdom. Auratia is enjoying a fragile peace after centuries of war brought about by The Devourer, a power-hungry dragon who inherited Morgath’s strength. The Devourer was finally defeated by the combined forces of the Osira, the dragons, and The Guardian. Auratia’s peace is once again shattered when The Devourer emerges from his prison to once again threaten the world, along with the dragons, the Osira, and other races that inhabit it.

Players start off by creating characters, unlike other free MMORPG’s, Dragon’s Prophet doesn’t impose any limitations on character slots. Players can create up to five characters per server, per account. Players can choose from 4 playable classes. Compared to other MMORPG’s, the number of classes available in the game might be a bit of a let-down but it’s important to note that the game is more of a medieval-fantasy version of Digimon or Pokemon which focuses on capturing and taming dragons. This is undoubtedly one of, if not the game’s best feature. Captured dragons grant players additional abilities and attributes when summoned. There are hundreds of dragons available in the game, each with unique skills and attributes, which makes for a virtually infinite combination of skills and abilities to fit every play style.

Once players have selected their class, they then get to customize their characters. Dragon’s Prophet features an in-depth customization feature that uses sliders which allow players to customize almost every part of their characters, from face and hair types, to height and chest size (boob slider included), to minute details like eye distance, nose height, and chin length. Spending a bit of time on customization allows players to create unique-looking characters. There are also premade looks and a handy random button for players who want to jump right into the game.

The World of Auratia

Dragon’s Prophet is a visually stunning game with graphics comparable to Tera, Neverwinter, and Skyrim. The environment is incredibly detailed and this attention to detail shows when viewing objects through the haze of a fire or getting up close and personal with a realistic-looking tree, or cliff-face for that matter. The jiggly boobs seem to be a bit too much though, almost to the point of defying gravity. The world is incredibly vast and immersive and it’s hard to resist the temptation of climbing on the back of a flying dragon and checking out those mountains in the distance. The character and dragon animations, however, seem a bit clunky at times. The sound is nothing special and is reminiscent of typical epic fantasy MMORPG’s, so are the sound effects.

An Ancient Evil Returns

After creating their character, the game starts players off with a quick prologue which also serves as a tutorial. During the prologue, players help the townsfolk of Puretia repel zombies, and doom dragons, and are treated to their very first boss fight in the end. The boss is easy enough to take down, just stay away from the red areas and go into the green areas if in need of healing. Players are taught the basics of movement and combat through tool tips that conveniently appear whenever players encounter something new this continues well into the main quest line dropping hints and advice on various gameplay features. While the tool tips can be quite helpful for newbies, they do take up a large portion of the screen. Players also have to manually close each tool tip that appears. This can get quite annoying when you’re busy doing a quest and manage to accumulate ten or more tool tips with no way to make them vanish all at once.

Helping Out the Townsfolk

Dragon’s Prophet features the typical kill and fetch quests, as well as escort quests and quests that require players to interact with the environment such as activating switches. Like most MMORPG’s completing quests rewards players with experience points, money, and equipment. The quests are easy enough to complete but most involve a whole lot of grinding which is a definite turn off for any MMORPG. Leveling up is fast due to the abundance of quests that are available in the town areas. Getting to max level, however, (currently 102) will take some time. Although, power-leveling can easily be done with help from stronger players.

Characters gain 3 attribute points and 1 Mastery point every time they level up. Skills are also automatically unlocked and improve upon reaching certain levels. Attribute points can be distributed between 7 attribute points that affect a characters stats such as Physical Damage, Defense, Critical Rate, and HP Regen among others. Mastery points, on the other hand, are used to unlock and improve passive skills that grant players bonus stats.

Taking Out the Bad Guys

Dragon’s Prophet features a fluid combo-based action-combat system similar to games like Tera and Neverwinter. Players move around using the WASD keys and can jump and roll around using the spacebar and Shift+A or D, respectively. The Left and Right mouse buttons are used for the basic attacks and QWER to cast other skills registered on the hotbar. Skills can be chained together to cast more powerful skills depending on the button combination. Players also need to aim their attacks at enemies by facing them. Targeted enemies are highlighted in red. The combat system is easy enough to master. The auto-targetting system, however, can be a real pain when you inadvertently attack another mob when your target dies or when you’re mouse moves slightly to the left or right and accidentally targets a different mob. This tends to happen a lot especially when using ranged classes.

That’s a Dragon?

One of Dragon’s Prophet’s selling points is its dragons. Like Digimon and Pokemon, much of the game involves capturing, taming, and training dragons. The game even comes with a Pokedex-like Dragon Compedium which shows information on captured dragons. Dragons can be found everywhere in the game world and serve as both mounts and as pets that can assist the player during combat. Dragons also grant characters additional skills and abilities when summoned. Dragons can also be trained to teach them additional skills. Dragons and their skills are the ultimate tools for customizing characters. Picking the right dragon for the right situation is often more helpful than having powerful equipment.

Aside from the typical winged, sharp-toothed, fire-breathing dragon variety we’re all familiar with, Dragon’s Prophet also showcases a vast array of dragon species. Auratia is filled with all types of dragons, from crocodile-like dragons that can swim, to venomous dragons that look more like bugs than reptiles. Also, not all dragons have the ability to fly, others can merely glide while others are land-locked altogether. Flying dragons are still the way to go when exploring though, and is the first type of dragon that players can tame in the game. Players can carry up to two dragons at a time that can be summoned at will. More slots can be purchased using Station Cash, the game’s premium currency. Othe captured dragons can be stored in the Dragon Chamber, which can be accessed through NPC’s found in most major cities.

Living The Life

Players with enough cash may lease in-game property which can be found in a persistent area called Baerton Islands. Keep in mind though that monsters in the housing areas are over level 35 and will make quick work of curious newbies who happen to wander into the zone. Players can rent apartments, or buy plots of land to build elaborate mansions on. Apartments are rented per day using gold and is initially bare. It’s up to the player to purchase house items or build them themselves through the games crafting system. Apartments can be upgraded using Apartment Blueprints, upgrading increases the number of items players can put in their house. Players with more gold can opt to purchase land instead. Plots can be purchased using gold or Station Cash. Players can either buy empty plots of land or purchase previously owned ones. Once bought, land plots also require players to pay rent depending on the size of the plot. Empty plots, like apartments also require players to purchase or build the structures and items themselves.

PVP

PVP choices in Dragon’s Prophet is a bit limited compared to other MMORPG’s. Aside from player vs player and dragon vs dragon duels, the only other form of PVP is the Frontier System. The Frontier System allows guilds to capture, control, and defend one or more of the Baerton Islands for a limited time. Territory Wars happen once every third night and turns the entire Baerton Island into active PVP. Controlling territories allows guilds to manage player housing taxes in the area and gives the guild access to Public Events which are needed to level up and improve the guild.

The Market

Item shops are a staple in free-to-play games and Dragon’s Prophet is no different. Players can buy Station Cash using real world cash which they can then use to purchase a variety of items from the premium shop. The game’s item shop contains consumables like potions to unbind bound items or temporary experience boosts, the shop also contains cosmetic items, dragon eggs, as well as items that help with raising and training dragons. Like most free-to-play item shops, premium items give paying players a bit of an advantage while still being fair to free to play players. Let’s hope that both Runewaker and Daybreak can keep this balance intact throughout the game’s life.

Final Verdict - Great

Dragon’s Prophet doesn’t really bring anything new to the table. What it does, however, is take features that have worked well for other MMORPG’s and incorporate them into the game such as the action-combat system, combos, and player housing. The game’s outstanding visuals and attention to detail is also the icing on an already great cake. Plus, dragons are badass anyway you look at it and a game with more than three hundred varieties of dragons is definitely worth checking out.
