Soul of the Ultimate Nation, or SUN Online, was a free-to-play 3D action MMORPG that featured intense action combat and an in-depth story focusing on an evil emperor using a dark power to control the world. Players join the rebellion against the Empire as one of five classes: Dragon Knight, Berserker, Valkyrie, Elementalist, or Shadow to stop the evil emperor and save the world. SUN Online offered instanced PvP zones and open world PvP, which was at its peak after level 40. Players could create Battle Zones with different gameplay types to enter PvP games, events, monster hunting, or missions to join up with other players in the lobby to get awesome loot.

Development History / Background:
Soul of the Ultimate Nation was developed by Webzen, a Korean game developer. It was published by NHN Corporation in the US, The9 in China, GameOn in Japan, Ingamba in Russia, and Webzen in Korea and the rest of the world. It is notable for its large transaction involving its export to China, where Webzen sold a contract for $13 million USD to The9 to export the game to the Chinese market—which at the time, was the largest export transaction in Korea’s online game history. The game was highly anticipated and was immensely popular in China, however its popularity fizzled out as the MMORPG market got saturated. The game ultimately closed in 2013 due to lack of players, and lack of marketing on the publishers’ parts—the amount of money the game was making did not make up for the cost of added development or server costs. Its six-year existence is evidence of the growing MMORPG market and rampant increase in graphic quality, SUN Online already being viewed as outdated to players in 2013.
