Most Popular MMORPGs on Steam June, 2016

steam-mmorpgs-most

More and more MMORPGs are launching on Steam to tap into their massive pool of users. From older games like Allods Online (launched 2010) to new titles like WildStar (launched in 2014), it seems like everyone is rushing to get their games on month. With the rising popularity of MMOs on Steam also comes some interesting data. Steam makes their playerbase numbers publicly available so we can see which games are the most popular. Going forward, we'll do a quick list of the most popular MMORPGs on Steam every few months. Keep in mind this list only looks at a game's average concurrent playerbase on Steam. So if a game is available through its own launcher AND on Steam, only the Steam playerbase will be counted.

Most Popular MMORPGs on Steam - June, 2016

#1 Tree of Savior ~14,700 Average concurrent players

Despite its disastrous launch, Tree of Savior takes the #1 spot on this list. Since open beta began on March 28, 2016 the game has been riddled with bugs, server stability issues, gold sellers, bots, and more. The issues with the game got so out of hand that IMC Games, the developer, temporarily shut off access to the game for new players (by removing the install button on Steam). This meant that new players couldn't download and play the game from May 25th all the way up until the restriction was lifted on June 23, 2016. Given that the game is open to everyone again, I suspect Tree of Savior's playerbase will begin to grow again.

#2 Path of Exile ~10,800 Average concurrent players

Path of Exile has been on Steam since the game launched on October 23, 2013. The Diablo inspired action RPG has maintained a sizeable playerbase since it first launched and continues to perform exceptionally well. Path of Exile happens to be one of the highest rated games on MMOs.com by our users, of if you haven't played it yet it's certainly worth checking out.

#3 Knight Online ~6,500 Average concurrent players

Thanks to its insane popularity in Turkey, Knight Online is one of the most successful free to play MMORPGs in the world. The game originally launched in 2004 and only made its way to Steam in March, 2016. Despite showing strong numbers on Steam, I suspect the game has much more users playing outside of Steam through the game's official launcher.

#4 Trove ~5,900 Average concurrent players

Despite recent drama over the game's cash shop policies, Trove has been a big winner for Trion Worlds. The voxel MMO originally launched into open beta in November, 2015 and made its way to Steam in June, 2015.

#5 Final Fantasy XIV ~4,600 Average concurrent players

Final Fantasy 15 is the first subscription based MMORPG (and the only) to make this list. A Realm Reborn originally launched on August 27, 2013 and made its way to Steam in February, 2014.

#6 Tera ~3,900 Average concurrent players

I remember it wasn't too long ago that En Masse Entertainment published an info-graphic stating that Tera was the most played MMORPG on Steam. Alas, times have changed. The game still maintains a healthy playerbase, but it's definitely no longer #1.

#7 Marvel Heroes 2016 ~3,300 Average concurrent players

The superhero action RPG Marvel Heroes takes the #7 spot this month. The game has remained a surprisingly steady playerbase since launching on Steam in April, 2013. The game's playerbase did stagnate between March-April, but quickly picked up pace over the last few months, perhaps due to the success of recent comic book movies (such as Captain America: Civil War)

#8 The Elder Scrolls Online: ~2,500 Average concurrent players

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited is the first buy to play MMORPG (and the only) to make this list. The game's concurrent users on Steam definitely understates the title's success, as Elder Scrolls Online has been a pretty big hit on consoles too.

#9 Neverwinter ~1,900 Average concurrent players

Since Neverwinter's original launch on Steam in December, 2013 the game's playerbase has slowly been declining. Despite this, 1,900 average concurrent players is still impressive. Plenty of people probably still play the game outside Steam and the game also found some success on consoles, so the Steam #s alone probably don't do the game justice.

#10 WildStar ~1,900 Average Concurrent players

WildStar has enjoyed quite a bit of success on Steam since launching on the platform on June 9, 2016. Despite one Korean investment bank predicting the game's demise by the end of 2016, it looks like WildStar may have a chance of staying afloat if the game's playerbase holds up. Time will tell.

#11 ArcheAge ~1,400 Average concurrent players

Trion Worlds has received a lot of flack over the years for making Archeage more and more pay 2 win. Despite this, the game still reaches a fairly sizeable audience both through Steam and through Trion's own launcher.

Been playing MMOs since I first got my hands on Ultima Online when I was 12 years old. Played so many games from Star Wars Galaxies to MapleStory to DAoC to World of Warcraft. Long time League of Legends player too! I'm also Known as "ReMo" and "Remotay"
