The Weekly Raid: What Do You Think Of MMORPG Reboots?

What's old is new again. Remastered versions, enhanced editions, remakes, you name it. Nostalgia sells. MMORPGs are no exception. Just this week Warp Portal, Nexon's global publishing arm announced plans to launch a classic Ragnarok Online server. Yesterday saw the launch of Secret World Legends, a tightened up re-work of the 2012 MMORPG The Secret World.

Reboots can even cross platforms. Lineage M, the mobile remake of the classic 1990s title is the top grossing app in Korea.

With so many MMORPG gamers pining for the "good old days", is it only a matter of time before studios apply the same reboot logic to our favorite genre. Reboots in mind, what classic MMORPG would you like to see rebooted next? Remember, we're not talking sequels, prequels, or spiritual successors here. We're talking remakes using the same (more or less) gameplay elements but with updated visuals, netcode, and so on.

My choice would have to be Star Wars Galaxies. There are many private emulation projects available, but with renewed interest in Star Wars franchise thanks to the new Trilogy, Electronic Arts and Disney have every interest to pump out more Star Wars games. It doesn't help that Daybreak Games likely owns the codebase for SWG, but a man can dream!

Lifelong gamer always looking for the next virtual adventure. I'm still waiting for the next big MMORPG. Until then, you can find me hopping between multiple games.
