The Weekly Raid: What Do You Think Of MMORPG Reboots?

What's old is new again. Remastered versions, enhanced editions, remakes, you name it. Nostalgia sells. MMORPGs are no exception. Just this week Warp Portal, Nexon's global publishing arm announced plans to launch a classic Ragnarok Online server. Yesterday saw the launch of Secret World Legends, a tightened up re-work of the 2012 MMORPG The Secret World.

Reboots can even cross platforms. Lineage M, the mobile remake of the classic 1990s title is the top grossing app in Korea.

With so many MMORPG gamers pining for the "good old days", is it only a matter of time before studios apply the same reboot logic to our favorite genre. Reboots in mind, what classic MMORPG would you like to see rebooted next? Remember, we're not talking sequels, prequels, or spiritual successors here. We're talking remakes using the same (more or less) gameplay elements but with updated visuals, netcode, and so on.

My choice would have to be Star Wars Galaxies. There are many private emulation projects available, but with renewed interest in Star Wars franchise thanks to the new Trilogy, Electronic Arts and Disney have every interest to pump out more Star Wars games. It doesn't help that Daybreak Games likely owns the codebase for SWG, but a man can dream!

Lifelong gamer always looking for the next virtual adventure. I'm still waiting for the next big MMORPG. Until then, you can find me hopping between multiple games.

I like it, I hate when games shut down for good. I wish I could play Earth Eternal on an official server again, not a private server with 3 people population at peak hours.

i hate mmo reboots especially when they try to go back to the classic era like how warpportal keeps releasing these wierd outdated servers when it really doesn't work, renewal is what makes the game good now.. eden equipment made life so much better so i don't know why they would just remove it on their new server and just throw clueless newbies out in the wild lol.

i can't stand these mobile reboots of the original ip, it's such an obvious generic garbage cash grab with hardly any enjoyment, i wouldn't mind investing into the games if the gameplay wasn't so disappointing.

I agree, the mobile reboots are a disgrace to the PC versions. I hate mobile games in general - they either involve microtransactions and act like a free trial or are too stupid, or sometimes both.
