borderlands 3 lilith bannerLionsgate is due to start production on the Borderlands movie which will be shot on location in Hungary. MidAtlantic Films head Adam Goodman revealed the news in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter while talking about other projects that will be shot in the country which has become the destination-of-choice for companies looking to start or resume filming amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It's remarkable, really, given all of the challenges that we've faced since this crisis began, that we've managed to keep going,” said Goodman. “We're opened up space for a Lionsgate film, Borderlands [starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart], we're doing season three of Jack Ryan for Paramount TV, and we're doing a Marvel project, which, for the usual security reasons, I can't talk about.”

Lionsgate first announced that they were working on a Borderlands movie with Arad Productions in 2015. Borderlands 3 developer Gearbox Software later re-confirmed development on the film in 2019. The upcoming film again made headlines in 2020 when Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford accidentally tweeted that Eli Roth will be directing it.

In mid-2020, it was confirmed that Cate Blanchett will be playing the Eridium-powered Siren Lilith and that Craig Mazin of the Chernobyl TV series will be writing the script.
