Diablo Creator David Brevik Reveals His Newest Game, It Lurks Below
It’s been a while since the gaming community has heard from former Gazillion and Blizzard North president David Brevik. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, Brevik is the man behind Diablo, Hellgate: London, and Marvel Heroes. Apparently, he’s been hard at work developing a new game through his Graybeard Games studio called It Lurks Below.
It Lurks Below is a side-scrolling 2D pixelized action RPG which looks to be a mashup between Diablo and Terraria. The game combines Diablo’s dungeon crawling mechanics with sandbox worlds typical of the voxel-based construction games. In a recent interview with Polygon, Brevik said that he’s a big fan of open world games like Terraria, Minecraft, and Starbound and that he wanted to “add something of his own to the genre.”
“I wanted more of a point to a lot of those games. I wanted to make an RPG, with classes and leveling up, random items, where you get more and more powerful as you go down into the core of the world and fight baddies.”
According to Brevik, It Lurks Below will be a “roguelike mix” of his games and the game’s he loves to play. The game will feature procedurally-generated dungeons with randomized mobs, which Brevik describes as “random built on random.”
It Lurks below is scheduled for launch on Steam later this year with a closed beta lined up for this weekend. Unfortunately, the closed beta slots are full, but you can still watch Brevik stream the game this weekend on the Graybeard Games official Twitch channel. Streaming starts on Friday, February 2nd at 9PM PT.
