Ship to ship combat in EVE Online has traditionally been long-range affairs where players try to outmaneuver each other while shooting missiles, lasers, and other projectiles at each other. CCP Games, however, has opened a new Abyssal Proving Grounds that brings players closer together and not in a good way.

From now until June 26th, players will be able to fight it out in the new Federation Day Proving Grounds, a free-for-all four-player battle of Thorax cruisers with close combat mechanics. All ships entering the battle will have their turret’s optimal range decreased by 50% and turret falloff increased by 50%. Players can also enter the Tachyon cloud in the center of the arena to get a 300% velocity boost and 50% inertia reduction.

“Close range combat and wild fluctuations in speed? This round will bring chaos and fun to all who join in!”

Other restrictions will also be put in place to ensure fast-paced ship to ship battles. “Thorax’s that step into the Proving Grounds for this event will be limited a maximum of one fitted local repair module (shield or armor),” explained CCP. “Capsuleers, meanwhile, will be restricted to using Meta 4 modules and implants. Additionally, sensor dampeners, weapon disruptors, shield boost amplifiers, shield rechargers, shield power relays, shield flux coils, and core defence field purgers are all banned in this event.”
