Final Fantasy XI R Mobile Reboot Has Officially Been Cancelled

Square Enix and Nexon’s Final Fantasy XI mobile reboot, dubbed Final Fantasy XI R, has officially been cancelled six years after the game was first announced. The project was reportedly scrapped at the end of 2020 because it didn’t meet expectations. According to Gamebiz.jp, the news was circulated by several media outlets last year but was only confirmed during Nexon’s Q4 investor call back in February.

FFXI R was unveiled back in March 2015 alongside the Vana’diel Project reveal for the original game. The mobile game was initially scheduled to launch in Korea and Japan in 2016 but it fell under the radar until reports that the project was cancelled surfaced in the end of last year.

The team working on the project has since been reassigned to other games.
