Popular Final Fantasy XIV streamer Arthars was banned today for 10 days after talking shit about another player in-game. The interesting part of this story is that the streamer didn't say anything in-game but merely ranted on his own stream criticizing the player for poor performance while dropping various profanities.

The specific reason for the ban was for breaking the following rule in Final Fantasy XIV's TOS:

3.3 Profanity and Offensive Language. You may not use profanity or any language that a reasonable person would find offensive. The Game is for players aged 13 and older. You agree to behave accordingly.

The clip below is the reason the streamer got banned.

Edit: The clip was deleted. The clip featured Arthars calling out the player (correctly) for poor performance while having some fun at his expense. It also included some profanity.

While in-game toxicity is against the rules in most games, being rude on Stream is a different story altogether. While companies like Square Enix always reserve the right to ban players for any reason (or no reason as per their TOS), it seems a bit odd for Arthars to get banned for something he said outside the game.

What's also interesting is that plenty of smaller streamers regularly drop profanities on their stream, so will Square Enix be enforcing this profanity rule outside the game on everyone or just popular streamers? I think Square Enix needs to clarify what's allowed and what isn't off the platform. Another interesting point is that no one gets banned for using third party tools like ACT (damage meters) or even streaming while using them which are strictly against the rules, but dropping a few profanities is apparently bannable.
