Kingshunt, a 5v5 F2P Arena Brawler / Moba, Launches into Early Access on Steam

Kingshunt, the 5v5 free to play action MOBA developed by Vaki Games, launched into Early Access on Steam yesterday. The launch was fairly lackluster as the game peaked at just 573 players on its first day and 153 on its 2nd day. While these numbers don't inspire much confidence, its still early. The core gameplay in Kingshunt is similar to smite in that action is combat oriented and the camera angle is third person.

Kingshunt blends real-time melee and magic combat with strategic tower and minion summoning. Beginning with fifteen Summoners to choose from, players will be able to use the melee, ranged, or utility characters that suit their playstyles. Each game consists of two teams of five seeking to conquer the other by controlling strategic locations and/or destroying the enemy base. The initial game mode, "Conquest", is a unique blend of lanes, towers and minions (similar to MOBA games) and capture and hold points (similar to Domination games).

Kingshunt's early access launched to 'mixed' reviews on Steam, but that's not the game's biggest issue. The MOBA market on PC is pretty much locked up already to heavyweights like League of Legends and Dota 2 with Smite taking a small share as well. There's no room in the market for even a 'good' MOBA let alone a mediocre one.

For a MOBA like Kingshunt to succeed it requires a massive playerbase as thats the only way to ensure fast queues and balanced matches. A tiny playerbase means players can expect longer queues and unfair matches.

MMORPGs on the other hand, despite having 'massively' in their acronym, can be enjoyed solo or with a small group of friends. Mediocre MMORPGs can survive with small playerbases and many have! The core gameplay mechanics in MMORPGs function just fine with few players. MOBAs and lobby based shooters don't.

But enough negativity! Kingshunt is free to play on Steam, so if you're bored, give it a try!
