NBA 2K21 Will Launch With An MMO Mode Called ‘The City’

nba 2k21 the city bannerNBA 2K21 will break into the MMO realm when the widely-popular game launches on next-gen consoles next week with a new feature called The City. The City is a larger and more content-rich version of The Neighborhood in previous 2K games featuring a virtual basketball community with several distinct neighborhoods, customizable characters, NPCs, quests, and faction rivalry.

“Imagine a map that is many, many times larger than previous Neighborhoods. A design that resembles a modern metropolis, complete with towering skyscrapers, sprawling plazas, and a city center. Oh, and it houses four distinct boroughs that are controlled by four rival Affiliations.”

As for the neighborhoods, there’s Rookieville for new players, a separate Borough for each of the four Affiliations located in the North, East, West, and South of The City, and the Event Center at the heart of the virtual city. Garage Hoops will also be scattered across the city where players will have the option to challenge other players to 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, Horse, and other casual game modes. There’s also a special full-sized court to commemorate the late Kobe Bryant.

Each Affiliation will be able to elect a player to be Mayor every six weeks. Mayors will be in charge of uniform selection, court designs, music playlists, and murals among other things. A Rival Day Conquest will also be held during the final two weeks of every mayor’s term.

“Rival Day Conquest is a key event where all rep-earning restrictions are removed from The City and you are encouraged to invade every other borough with your teammates and take hold of the courts,” explains Executive Producer Erick Boenisch. “Keep a close eye on the leaderboard located in each court area; at the end of Rival Day Conquest, the four Affiliations will be ranked by score and seeded for the culmination of the season, the Rival Day Championship.”

NBA 2K21 will be launching on the Xbox Series X and S on November 10th and on the PlayStation 5 on November 12th. Check out what The City has to offer in the video after the break. You can also head over to the NBA 2K official site to learn more about it.
