New World Previews New Swamp Zone And Fishing In A Press Demo

new world reekwater preview bannerIt’s been a while since we covered Amazon’s upcoming fantasy sandbox survival MMORPG New World. Over the past year, the game has undergone significant changes to its gameplay and has been delayed a couple of times for further development. This summer’s playtest, however, seems to have made a mark on testers who have been showering the game with praises over the past few months.

The game is now back in Alpha testing and the developers are quietly working on the game in preparation for the game’s launch in 2021. Amazon says that they’re currently introducing more mid-game content and quests along with improvements to the game’s combat system which so far has been more of a hack-and-slash affair rather than the strategic attack-block-and-counter that the team envisioned. Spears have also been added into the game for players who prefer a more mid-range weapon.

In a recent demo for the press, Amazon showed off two new additions coming to the next Alpha build: an endgame zone called Reekwater and a fishing system. Reekwater is a swampy, flooded region with small villages on floating platforms and a Bayou-like main settlement half of which is securely nested on the tree-lined banks of the swamp and the other half perilously perched over the water. The boggy zone is also home to the Siren Queen and her army of supernatural monsters.

As for fishing, players will be able to engage in a mini-game style cast-and-reel system to catch fish in the game. Fish can be used to craft various recipes or can be broken down for other uses. Amazon says that they’ll be filling Aeternum’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams with over 40 different types of fish. Players will also have a chance to reel in ultra-rare sea monsters with a little luck and a whole lot of skill.

New World is scheduled to launch in Spring 2021.
