While the last few Path of Exile expansions didn’t attract as much attention as Grinding Gear Games would have hoped, Friday’s Scourge expansion launch seems to have piqued the interest of quite a few players. According to the studio, player concurrency peaked at 254,570 players on launch day which equates to 96% of the MMOARPG’s all-time peak concurrency record.

The launch itself would have been flawless, a rarity in MMO releases, except for a crash issue related to linked items in chat. “We had one issue in the first hour where our regional routers were crashing occasionally when routing chat packets containing linked items,” explained Grinding Gear. “Each of these crashes would disconnect about 10% of players. We temporarily disabled chat, which mitigated the issue, and were then able to restore chat functionality without item linking.”

The team is also planning to roll out a patch later this week that will introduce various improvements and fixes to Scourge content, including making the Scourged item transformation progress bar and the Blood Crucible resource bar more visible along with a few balance tweaks to Veiled Modifiers.

The Scourge expansion is now live on PC/Mac and will be coming to the Xbox and PlayStation family of consoles on October 28th.

Meanwhile, Grinding Gear has release the new Atlantis Mystery Box over the weekend which contains 36 new ocean-themed premium items. You can check out the box’s contents in the video below.
