SoulCatcher AR Seems To Be What Pokemon GO Should Have Been

Following the success of Pokemon GO, it's inevitable that a few companies would try and jump on the augmented reality game bandwagon. The most recently announced AR game is SoulCatcher AR, made by Korean developer HanbitSoft. From the description, it sounds a lot like what we all wanted out of Pokemon GO.

In SoulCatcher, people wander the real world using a GPS-based system and attempt to catch "historical heroes,"such as Cleopatra, in a similar manner to the way that you would catch Pokemon in Pokemon GO. There are over 250 heroes in all, which you are attempting to catch in order to complete "an illustrated book." Additionally, there are "400 specific attractions," including "relics, sightseeing spots, and local festival sites that are related to each person."

Once you have assembled a party of heroes, you can take to the streets and battle street monsters. You can also battle friends or other players that you come across in the real world. You know, like we all expected that we would be able to do in Pokemon GO.

HanbitSoft provided the following—Google Translated—statement alongside the announcement.

SoulCatcher AR is a game that combines our discriminatory power with the collective type AR game that can cope with the explosive growth of the AR game market. We are leading the domestic AR field as well as being selected as a business, and we will lead the AR game market.

SoulCatcher AR is expected to launch in South Korea in the first quarter of 2017. An international release has yet to be announced.
