As Suikoden fans had fervently hoped, Konami has officially announced that it will be reviving the Suikoden franchise after a decade of letting it gather dust on the back shelf. Fans of the classic JRPG won’t be getting a new game though, but remastered versions of both Suikoden 1 and 2 which will be arriving on Steam sometime next year.

The remasters will come with various improvements over the original games which were released way, way back in the 90s. These include a full visual and art revamp while still remaining true to the original style. The original character artist, Junko Kuwano, even came back to redraw the character portraits from the first game. The games’ audio will also be getting a touch up in addition to new environmental sounds which weren’t present in the original games.

Konami will also be introducing modern gameplay features such as auto-battles and the ability to increase battle speed.

While it’s definitely good news for fans of the franchise, I admittedly had my fingers crossed for a Suikoden MMORPG. But if the remasters turn out to be huge successes, we can probably expect a long line of new Suikoden games to come out in the future. If not, there’s still its spiritual successor Eiyuden Chronicle to look forward to.
