Taiwanese Player Loses False Advertising Suit Against Laplace M Over Gacha Mechanics

laplace m keyart bannerLast week, SuperData owner Nielsen Games reported that 39% of American gamers have been spending more on games over the past few months. Now, it’s not my place to tell you how to spend your hard-earned money but at least try to check whether the purchase is worth it. Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a powerful new weapon is one thing, spending it on a random chance to unlock characters is another.

One Taiwanese player reportedly spent approximately $15,000 to make 3,133 character rolls on X-Legend Entertainment’s mobile ‘gacha’ MMORPG, Laplace M, a.k.a Tales of Wind a.k.a Kingdom of the Wind. He even took out bank loans and borrowed money from friends in his desperation to unlock characters. He later filed a lawsuit against X-Legend claiming that their gacha mechanics were false advertising and sought $30,000 in damages.

X-Legend, however, cited a clause in the game’s EULA stating that players were not guaranteed to get certain items in the game. According to MMOCulture, this argument was more than enough for the Taipei District Court to summarily dismiss the case. The court also advised players to spend wisely and be more responsible when it comes to handling their finances.
