Red Barrels’ next Outlast game, The Outlast Trials, will allow you to take a friend, or three, along for a heart-pounding traipse through a facility overrun by all manner of crazies.

The next installment in the popular horror game series is set during the Cold War and revolves around the Murkoff Corporation, a private company running brutal experiments on prisoners and volunteers to test various methods and achieve breakthroughs in brainwashing and mind control.

As you would expect from an Outlast game, Outlast Trials comes with all the trappings of a great psychological horror game, including psychotic doctors, supernatural soldiers, and a deranged clown armed with a dental drill. For the first time in the series, the campaign can be played either solo or with a group of up to four players which is definitely a welcome addition, especially for players who’d rather not go up against crazy clowns by themselves. As Red Barrel says, “It’s always better to shit your pants in good company.”

Outlast Trials doesn’t have a definite release date yet, but the studio will be running a brief weekend closed beta test from October 28th to November 1st for those who want to traumatize themselves ahead of everyone else. You can get started on that by checking out the gory closed beta trailer after the break. Signups for the closed beta test are also now being accepted on the game’s Steam page.
