Dekaron Review

By Dimitri Jordan

Dekaron is a 3D Fantasy MMORPG developed by GameHI and published by Vertigo Games (Previously Nexon EU) that was released in the U.S. on May 19, 2008. Originally brought to the U.S. as 2Moons, Dekaron faced many troubles early on in the form of slow-paced gameplay, but quickly gained a sizable following. After Acclaim Games, the original publisher, went defunct in 2010, the game was quickly picked up by Nexon. They rereleased it with the name it used in Asian markets, Dekaron, and added tons of gameplay changes. Chief among these changes were increased visuals, faster gameplay, and more content. Since its re-release, Dekaron has held a large following, and remains popular today.

Starting Up

When first starting the game, players may be a little disappointed with the character creation process. The classes are gender locked and there is no customization concerning character appearance. This dates Dekaron terribly and may push some players away. After creating a character, players are dumped in the city of Ardeca. They are immediately overwhelmed with higher level players sitting around in droves, some of them moving, but most immobile and silent. Dekaron features a store function where players can sell their own items, and many set up shop and ignore the game until they’ve made a profit. This too may overwhelm some players as they start out.

There is no formal tutorial quest line or area so players are immediately thrust into questing, battling monsters, and bringing drops back to complete the quests. Players can move by pressed the WASD keys or left-clicking the ground and use skills by using the number keys or right-clicking the desired skill.

The quests are usually straightforward and involve killing a particular enemy and collecting a special quest drop, collecting a certain item to complete quests. Occasionally quests revolve around killing bosses, and these enemies often require multiple players attacking at once. They provide a good excuse for teaming up with other players and give a good boost in loot and experience.

The First Few Levels

The first few levels fly by and that’s what lends the arcade-feel to Dekaron’s gameplay. Unlike most MMOs that require days, weeks, or even months of grinding to feel a progression, Dekaron’s high level cap of 200 means players can quickly fly past these levels early on.

Players are rewarded stat and skill points for every level. They are able to distribute stat points as they want, but most players will focus on one or two stats that matter most for their class. Skill points are used to upgrade skills. Skills are unlocked as players reach their requisite levels, with higher skill levels requiring higher player levels. While players can choose which stats to increase, players receive enough skill points to have most skills as strong as possible for their level, which takes a lot of the pressure of choosing the right skills. However, this also removes any possible customization through skills.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Dekaron is straightforward. Players complete quests, almost exclusively by killing monsters and collecting drops, and move from one quest hub town to the next. Because of its age, there is little that Dekaron can bring to players familiar with MMOs, but players new to the genre may enjoy the simple, streamlined gameplay that isn’t bogged down with extra content.

In addition to quests, players will go through instanced dungeons. These require large amounts of the in-game currency, DIL, to enter, and have multiple difficulties. Players can choose the regular option, Rank B, Rank A, or Abyss. Each difficulty increases the strength or number of the monsters inside. In addition to defeating monsters, dungeons have a time limit for players to complete them in. Dungeons can be either for individual players or for parties.

Like Mu Online and Lineage 2, Dekaron is an MMORPG that thrived on private servers. Those uninterested in the official servers can explore the game through private servers that offer players varying XP rates and custom content.

PvP

One of the biggest aspects in Dekaron is PvP. Duels are allowed everywhere in the world, and some areas have open PvP sections where players can fight with one another at will. The three main modes of PvP in Dekaron are the DK Square, Siege Mode, and the Colosseum.

The DK Square is one of the easiest ways to engage in PvP. Players enter a lobby area, where they are matched with other players for PvP matches. These players can be from different areas, different levels, or even different servers. This cuts down on the time to find a match dramatically. Players are grouped into teams and must battle other players as well as monsters.

In addition to the PvP fun, players can receive missions from the DK Square quartermaster, which consists of tasks to accomplish while battling, such as killing a certain number of monsters or opponents. The DK Square becomes available at level 50, and separates players by level: 50-75, 76-99, 100-130, 131-200.

In the Colosseum, players fight in a variety of modes. In the Battle Royal, 16 players battle it out in a massive free-for-all until only one is left standing. In Party ranking mode, teams of 2 or 5 fight to determine the stronger team. Finally, in Guild mode, two guilds duke it out to decide guild ranking.

In Siege Mode, players engage in guild wars in Genoa castle. One guild is tasked with defending the castle, and one guild is tasked with attacking it, breaking down gates, and flooding in, killing the occupying guild. Whichever guild wins the guild war becomes the owner of the castle, and the guild leader becomes the king of the territory. The winning guild will also hold this position until another challenging guild dethrones them.

Overall, Dekaron offers a wide assortment of PvP options, and their matchmaking systems ensure that players are able to compete regardless of their level, location, or even server.

Cash Shop

The Cash Shop in Dekaron only has a few items, including the usual mounts, items to help with crafting, and costumes. There are items that minority boost stats, but they are the most expensive. Not many players opt for them over the best crafted armors that are a much better endgame option. This relieves the widespread issue of pay-to-win situations in MMOs and leaves Dekaron players on more or less equal ground.

Final Verdict - Good

Dekaron does a lot of things right. It has fast, arcade-style action that’s easy to feel improvement with, a variety of character and classes with skills that make them feel and look unique, tons of PvP options, and little chance of turning into a pay-to-win situation. However, the lack of character customization and quest variety make it feel dated as an older MMORPG and there is not much to distinguish it from others in the crowded genre of MMORPGs. Ultimately, Dekaron would make a great game for those first starting in the MMO genre, or those who want a “return to roots” game that isn’t bogged down by a lot of extra content.
