Battle of the Immortals Review

By, Marc Marasigan

Battle of the Immortals, or BOI, is a free-to-play 3D MMORPG that puts players in the shoes of an Immortal, a long dead hero brought back to life to protect the mythical world of Metonia from the Norse god Loki, and his army of iconic mythological villains including the Scorpion King of Egyptian mythology and the Dragon Emperor of the Chinese. The game is the predecessor to War of the Immortals, or WOI, an MMORPG from the same developer, Perfect World, and take place 300 years after the events of WOI. Battle of the Immortals and War of the Immortals are basically mirror versions of each other beyond slight differences. The game’s graphics look a bit dated and can be compared to other games that came out roughly around the same time, like Silkroad Online, RF Online, and, of course, War of the Immortals. And, like War of the Immortals, BOI features intricately-done, oversized, flashy gear. The graphics aren’t bad and might even have been cutting edge when it came out in 2010 but it definitely won’t be making waves in the modern era. The sounds and music are good but are a bit generic.

Immortals Reborn

Before players go off to face Loki and his legion of resurrected badasses, players must first create their character. Players choose from one of seven playable characters, each with different playstyles and party roles. Players also get to choose their character's gender, which is always a good thing, but as far as customization goes BOI only offers a few different options for hairstyle and face type. Once finished players are then transported to the starting zone where they are briefed by Valkyries, angel-like creatures from Norse mythology, on what’s going on in Motenia. Players are also quickly taught the basics of movement and interacting with NPC’s with the use of tool tips, and go through a somewhat lengthy prologue that’s used to advance the storyline.

The Same Old Formula

Battle of the Immortal’s gameplay and overall feel is similar to War of the Immortals, which isn’t surprising considering that WOI was initially planned to be an expansion to BOI. And, like most MMORPGs, follows the same format that most MMORPG’s have been using, and abusing, for the past couple of years—where the hero completes quests for various NPC’s which lead him/her from one area to the next while moving the story along. Quests are mostly kill quests with the occasional collecting or gathering quest thrown in to break the monotony. Navigating from one quest to the next, however, is a piece of cake thanks to the game’s auto-pathfinding system. Just click on the quest helper and your character automatically travels to the point of interest whether it’s a mob area, a gathering spot, or an NPC.

Character progression in the game is also reminiscent of old-school MMORPG’s. Progression is fairly fast since I was able to reach level 20 in about an hour or so. After level 20 players gain 2 stat points every time they level up, which they can then distribute across five different stats: VIT, SPR, STR, INT, and DEX. Skills are automatically unlocked by reaching certain levels which can then be improved in exchange for gold and experience points by visiting a trainer NPC. Like War of the Immortals, BOI lacks a skill tree which severely limits customization. Also, as players progress through the game they acquire Soul Gear—weapons and armor that grow stronger and change appearance the more they’re used.

The Daily Grind

As you might have guessed from the heading, Battle of the Immortal’s gameplay is extremely grindy. As I mentioned above, quests mostly involve killing a certain number of mobs, moving on to the next NPC, then killing even more mobs. Killing mob after mob, after mob, might appeal to some players but personally five mobs is where I draw the line. The game’s point-and-click and tab-targetting combat system makes gameplay even more repetitive. While the game’s low difficulty, or should I say no difficulty, only makes the game worse. Simply click on a mob and your character automatically attacks it, you don’t even have to use a skill. Unfortunately, the same applies to bosses which take around 10 normal attack hits to defeat.

Gotta Catch ‘em All

One of Battle of the Immortal’s selling points is its pet system. Players can catch almost any monster in-game by defeating randomly dropped catchable versions of themselves. Players can have up to three pets at a time but can only summon one to fight by their side. Pets also level up and gain stat points which can be distributed across the same five stats as player characters.

PVP

No MMORPG would be complete without a way for players to test out their skills against other players and win bragging rights. In Battle of the Immortals players can challenge other players to 1v1 duels at any time by right-clicking on the player’s name and choosing duel. Players can also join guilds when they reach level 50, which allows them to participate in guild vs guild territory wars.

Cash Shop

Like most free-to-play games, Battle of the Immortals offers a variety of premium items to give paying players an edge over the rest of the playerbase. Fortunately, BOI’s cash shop is free of any game-breaking items or overpowered weapons and gear. The cash shop mostly contains boosters and a variety of consumable items, including items that give a boost to upgrading gear. Some players might consider upgrade boosters to be pay-to-win but personally they’re alright by my book. At least you don’t see paying players sporting ridiculously overpowered weapons.

The Final Verdict - Fair

Battle of the Immortals has everything players look for in a typical MMORPG: a good storyline, a fluid combat system, pets, mounts, and dungeons. Unfortunately, while the game might have been passable few years ago, it just won’t cut it against more recently released free-to-play titles such as Tera, Cabal II, and ArcheAge. The game’s repetitive and grindy gameplay doesn’t help it either. If classic MMORPG’s are your thing and don’t mind grinding then there’s really no harm in giving Battle of the Immortals a shot, after all it is free to play. Otherwise, you’re better off trying a more modern alternative.
