Overview

Battlefield Heroes Overview

Battlefield Heroes was a WWII-inspired MMO third-person shooter with RPG elements that hailed from the popular Battlefield series of games, unique for its third person view rather than BF’s typical first person perspective. Heroes also featured a cartoony art style similar in vein to Team Fortress 2, as well as a simplified class system that consisted of a Soldier, Gunner and Commando reminiscent of some of TF2’s iconic classes. Players could also take control of vehicles, which are modeled after real vehicles from WWII, such as the light tank modeled after the Panzer III, and an aircraft that looks like the Supermarine Spitfire. The gameplay consisted of multiple game modes that are entered via a matchmaking lobby that pits two armies against each other, as well as an experience system that allows players to level up and purchase class abilities. The game was essentially a simplified version of the Battlefield games that was free-to-play and third-person.

Battlefield Heroes was developed by EA Digital Illusions CE initially then further developed by Easy Studios. The game was published by Electronic Arts, and was later published on Aeria Games’ network. Its closed beta began in 2008, open to professional beta testers only, and was slowly opened to the public via social media, through comments and riddles that were awarded beta keys. The game had users clamoring for beta keys, eventually opening into open beta in 2009. The game was released that year, and was relatively popular during its inception. A rift was created in late  2009 between free and paying users that allowed paying users to progress in the game much more rapidly, which added to controversy about the game’s pay-to-win nature. Their decision to shut down the game in 2015 was made because of its declining user base, also shutting down some other free-to-play MMOs—this was not well-received as they refused to refund money that had been converted into in-game currency that was about to become obsolete.
