Blitz Brigade Review

By Herman Y.

Blitz Brigade is a free-to-play, 3D online first person shooter developed and published by Gameloft, a popular mobile gaming company known for creating high quality games. Blitz Brigade launched worldwide on May 9, 2013 and quickly become one of the most popular shooters on mobile devices. It currently has over 10 million downloads on Google Play alone and continues to grow every day. Blitz Brigade is one of those games that most people don’t expect to find on mobile. Blitz Brigade manages to combine brilliant graphics that rival console/PC games, smooth action gameplay, huge maps, and more onto a small phone or tablet. Two years after its release on Android and iOS, Blitz Brigade is still one of the most popular shooters on the mobile platform.

Huge Battles on Tiny Screens

Blitz Brigade is one of the few online mobile shooters that feature huge maps that resemble the PC game series, Battlefield. In fact, Blitz Brigade is Gameloft’s version of Battlefield Heroes on mobile devices. There are various different maps in the game and each map is enormous with different objectives depending on the game mode. It is very rare to find mobile shooters with persistent maps this big. Each match can hold a maximum of twelve players (6v6) and players can either work together or split up to complete objectives. To help players get around in these large maps, Blitz Brigade has vehicles such as jeeps, tanks, and helicopters which is one feature I never expected a mobile online shooter to have. Blitz Brigade is the only mobile online shooter where players have vehicles to travel around in a persistent map. Gameloft has literally created Battlefield on mobile devices and playing this game still amazes me even in 2015.

Graphics

The graphics in Blitz Brigade are absolutely gorgeous. For a game that came out in 2013, it is still one of the best looking games in 2015. The game has a cartoony look, very similar to Battlefield Heroes and Team Fortress 2, and has very bright and colorful visuals. Every environment is sharp and detailed, the lighting and colors add life to every scene, and there’s lots of different terrain and objects that make each map unique. Weapons have different appearances and flashy shooting effects and there are lots of explosions and visually appealing animations. The graphics were designed to age very well and the visuals can appeal to people of all ages.

Classes

Blitz Brigade has five classes which include: Soldier, Gunner, Medic, Sniper, and Stealth. Soldiers are an all-around class who mainly use assault rifles and SMGs and have average speed and average health. Gunners are tanky soldiers who use machine guns and are slow but have the highest amounts of health. Medics are quick and powerful at close combat with shotguns and have the ability to heal teammates. Snipers specialize in sniper rifles and are very deadly from long distances, but have low speed and health. Stealths are assassin-type characters with the highest speed and lowest health that can turn invisible and are efficient with silent guns and melee weapons. Players start off with the Soldier and Gunner class for free and the other classes are unlocked as players level up. The Medic is unlocked at lvl 5, Sniper is unlocked at lvl 20, and Stealth is unlocked at lvl 30. Classes can also be unlocked early with Diamonds (premium currency). All classes are useful if played correctly and each class has fairly different gameplay. Like most other shooter games, all classes are very action-oriented despite the various roles they play.

Gameplay and Modes

Blitz Brigade plays like your typical first person shooter and features three unique modes. Players can move around with a virtual joystick, aim the crosshair by dragging the screen, and jump, shoot, and use iron sights with buttons on the bottom right of the screen. There is also a button on the left that allows players to sprint when held down. The controls are fairly standard for a mobile shooter but, like all mobile shooters, the touch controls take a while to get used to. Personally I find that touch screen shooters are very difficult to control compared to PC and console shooters. It takes a long time to get used to the aiming and accuracy is one of the most important aspects of a shooter. The touch controls will likely haunt new players as they fumble around trying their best to go up against seasoned veterans who can aim fast and kill fast.

The three modes in Blitz Brigade are Domination, Deathmatch, and Flag Capture. Domination is a Battlefield-style “Capture the Base” mode, in which teams must capture and hold all the bases in order to earn more points than the enemy team. Domination features the largest maps in the game as well as vehicles to help players move around quickly. Deathmatch is a “Team Deathmatch” mode where the objective is to kill enemy players to get points and the first team to a certain amount of points wins. The maps tend to be smaller in this mode and there are no vehicles. Flag Capture is a “Capture the Flag” mode, in which teams must capture a flag in their enemy’s base and bring it back to their base to earn points. This mode has medium sized maps and also has vehicles. Killing enemy players who are carrying your team’s flag will cause them to drop the flag and touching the flag and teleport it back to your team’s base. All three modes are unique and fun in their own way and offer something for everyone. All three modes are 6v6 and last about 10 minutes each.

Cash Shop/In-App Purchases (IAP)

Although Blitz Brigade can be thoroughly enjoyed without spending money, the game has a heavy pay-to-win feel to it. Diamonds (the premium currency) can be used to buy all sorts of powerful “cash-only” weapons which aren’t super overpowered but generally have better stats than the “in-game gold” weapons. Blitz Brigade also has a lot of level-locked skills and weapons which can only be accessed after reaching a certain level that can be unlocked with Diamonds. Therefore, players who pay have instant access to high level skills, weapons, and items, and have an advantage over lower level non-paying players. Diamonds (and in-game gold) can also be used to purchase XP and damage boost items, items such as grenades, health packs, and invincibility (temporary), items that can kill everyone in the battlefield instantly, and instant revives. While all of these items can also be purchased with gold, spending money on Diamonds allows players to have more of these items which can give them an advantage on the battlefield. With Diamonds, players can also unlock new classes earlier and upgrade weapons (which can only be upgraded with Diamonds). Gameloft does give out Diamonds occasionally through leveling up, completing achievements, and missions but players that pay almost always have an advantage. Overall, the game feels very pay-to-win based on the game’s Cash Shop and level-locked system that can be bypassed by paying. However, keep in mind, as a shooter, skill and strategy are also required to do well and a free player with enough skill and strategy can still defeat a paying player.

Final Verdict – Great

Despite the heavy pay-to-win feel of the game, Blitz Brigade offers a very fun high quality Battlefield-style game unlike any other online mobile shooter. With top notch graphics, fast-paced shooting combat, vehicles to travel around in, a large player base, and lots of action and strategy, Blitz Brigade is an impressive online first person shooter that will appeal to both hardcore and casual players.
