Overview

Epic Card Battle Overview

In Epic Card Battle, players spend most of their time collecting cards, through the Campaign, Card Loot PvP, or by buying cards and decks. Many of the best cards can only be purchased with Diamonds, Epic Card Battle’s premium currency that must be bought with real money. This effectively makes the game “pay-to-win” as only those willing to spend money will have access to the best cards. Gameplay wise, Epic Card Battle plays a lot like Berserk: The Cataclysm and Summoner's Legion since battles are automatic and require no player input.

Epic Card Battle Key Features -

  • Build your deck - Build your deck from dozens of cards and five factions.
  • Card Battles - Gameplay is entirely automated and requires no player input. The only strategy element derives from deck building.
  • Improve your cards - Earn Rubies and use them to make your cards even stronger.
  • Play the campaign - Beat the campaign mode, where each stage has three difficulties.
  • Climb the leaderboards - Put your deck to the test against other players.

Epic Card Battle Review

By, Dimitri Jordan

Epic Card Battle is an Online Trading Card Game developed and published by momoStorm Entertainment, released on July 9th, 2015. It is available both from its own website as well as Steam. Epic Card Battle mimics the gameplay of popular card games like Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone, however the battles in the game operate without any player input, removing nearly all the strategy from the game.

Starting Up

When first starting the game, players are able to choose between two servers. They can then create an account by choosing a nickname, gender, and server region. Players then receive their first card, and are introduced to the game through playing the first Campaign stage. Players can then progress through the Campaign to unlock more cards or gold to buy cards, or begin multiplayer. There is additionally a tutorial with several sections that players can play through to brush up on learning the specifics of the card battles. When playing Campaign or PvP, player input is limited to what cards are chosen. During battles, players cannot choose targets for cards to attack, which cards get healed, or anything else. Battles just play out for the player.

The First Few Levels

Levels are more or less meaningless in Epic Card Battle. At level 10 players unlock the ability to enhance cards, while at 50 they unlock the Card Loot PvP mode. Besides unlocking these features leveling only results in a small bonus of gold and energy, which is used to participate in Campaign and PvP.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Epic Card Battle is minimal, almost to the point of being nonexistent. Player input is reduced to picking which cards to use for each fight, which does take a little strategy. However, automated battles takes away any strategy the player put into choosing the cards, as they may act in ways players wouldn’t choose. Outside of battles, most features rely on players either grinding tons of gold or relying on premium currency to become competitive.

Features

Once players reach level 10, they can enhance their cards using Rubies won bought from the Cash Shop or won through the Campaign. 1 star cards take 38 Rubies to reach level 10, which ramps up quickly with 4 star cards taking nearly 1,200 Rubies. This greatly out paces the rate at which players can accrue Rubies in the Campaign, so those looking to enhance their cards will have to spend money buying Rubies in the Cash Shop.

Epic Card Battle also has an Academy where players can learn the basics of reading cards, card abilities, and deck building. These skills are explained over four courses, and after completing the Academy players are rewarded with 5 Diamonds.

Additionally, players can sacrifice cards to earn Rubies. This provides a much needed boost in gaining rubies, but for higher tier cards it will often still not be enough to upgrade them reasonably. There is also a glitch where the game will sacrifice all multiples of one card, whether or not the player wanted to sacrifice them all.

PvP

There are several modes of PvP in Epic Card Battle: Coins Bet, Cards Loot, and Ladder. Each battle is asynchronized, and players cannot communicate with one another during battles.

In Coins Bet, players can earn coins from defeating the decks of other players. Players must bet 100 gold in order to enter a match, so there is a possibility of losing gold from this game mode.

Cards Loot has players battling in much the same way as Coins Bet. However, the losing player will lose their used cards to the winning player, making this game mode much more interesting. It is only unlocked once players reach level 50. Epic cards are also not allowed in Cards Loot matches.

Ladder mode has players vying for the top spot by battling other players. At the end of every season, or every two weeks, the top players are rewarded with Diamonds, Rubies, and cards. However, because better cards can only be gained through purchasing Diamonds, it’s highly unlikely that those not paying to win will reach those top ranks.

Cash Shop

The Cash Shop in Epic Card Battle offers a lot to players willing to spend. Diamonds are the premium currency of the game, which can be used to buy better cards, decks, gold, Rubies, and more. Players can purchase several levels of VIP status using Diamonds, which increase experience earned from battles, maximum energy, and deck size, among other things. At VIP levels 4, 5, and 6 players can directly purchase individual Diamond, Legend, and Epic cards, respectively.

Final Verdict - Poor

Even by the most lax definitions, it’s hard to label Epic Card Battle a game. The player has almost no input in general, and none at all during the actual battles. The Freemium aspect geared toward mobile games seems distinctly misplaced on PC, and the lack of depth comes off as a money grab. When there are free alternatives like Hearthstone, and Magic: The Gather is available for as much as would be necessary to enjoy Epic Card Battle, it’s hard to justify this game. Epic Card Battle doesn’t even have enough cards to appeal to collector s, and overall it would be best if players invested their time elsewhere.
