Line of Sight Overview

Line of Sight is an FPS set in a modern military world plagued by monstrous creatures bent on taking human lives, described as "Bioshock meets Call of Duty in a multiplayer game." Developed by the creators of Combat Arms, the game offers a similar experience polished for the modern generation of gaming. A variety of features are available, including detailed character and weapon customization and an array of psionic abilities to unleash against your foes. Customize every element of your weapon, create your own loadouts, equip unique superhuman abilities such as fireballs and ice shards, then enter the lobby to select between a variety of game modes. The game offers modes tailored to both casual and hardcore players, offering basic matchmaking as well as rankings, leagues, clans, and a classic mode where the game's psionic abilities are deactivated.

Line of Sight Key Features:

  • Detailed Weapon Customization – customize every element of a weapon and add it to your loadout, designing it to suit your playstyle.

Line of Sight Review

By, Marc Marasigan

Line of Sight is a military-themed 3D lobby-based FPS set in the near future where mercenaries make use of both modern weapons and psychic abilities on the battlefield. Players fight it out in multiple game modes across a variety of environments including cargo ships, snow-covered forests, and farms. Visually, the game is one of the best I’ve seen in free-to-play FPS games. Not surprising since the game runs on the Unreal Engine. The ragdoll animations seem a bit exaggerated though, and the blood sprays need to be toned down a bit. As for the audio, Line of Sight has got it down to a tee. The weapons sound great and the dramatic background music works well with the game’s theme, when it’s not drowned out by the gunfire and explosions that is.

Soldiers of Fortune

Players logging in to the game for the first time are given a choice of four pre-made avatars. These have no effect on the game and can be changed by purchasing the rest through the in-game cash shop. Additional avatars, including female ones, can also be purchased using premium and regular game currency. Each of the avatars have their own back story which is a nice touch. They may have no bearings during matches but it’s these little details that make a great game.

Meet Sarah

After choosing their avatars, players go through a quick tutorial overseen by Sarah, a disembodied voice who orders you around and cracks jokes from time to time. The tutorial covers movement, weapons, grenades, and using psychic abilities. If you’ve played any FPS game before then you should have no problems skipping the tutorial and jumping right into the action. You will, however, miss out on the rewards, which the game will dutifully remind you of should you try to skip the tutorial. The entire thing takes around 10 minutes to complete so it's not much of a bother.

Psychic Soldiers

Line of Sight follows the same formula as most lobby-based shooters. Players queue up for a match, either alone or with friends, wait for the matchmaking system to do its job, then jump into the game. What’s unique about Line of Sight is that, depending on the game mode, players are able to use psionic abilities, such as teleporting, calling magical airstrikes, and shooting flames from their hand. Using these abilities requires psionic energy, which slowly regenerates over the course of a match, along with a bit of health. Don’t worry, though. You can still use abilities even when low on health, and you won’t die if you use them either. If super powers don’t do it for you, Line of Sight also features classic game modes which offer a more traditional FPS experience.

Lock and Load

Another of Line of Sight’s notable features is fully customizable weapons. You can deck out your favorite SMG, rifle, or shotgun with a myriad of accessories including muzzle brakes, forward grips, laser sights, flashlights, and optics. You can even choose ammo types and paint them in a variety of pre-made designs. Before you can customize your arsenal though, you have to unlock and purchase them first. Better guns are unlocked as you level up your account. Once unlocked, weapons can be purchased using in-game currency, allowing you to use them for 3 days, 7 days, a month, or permanently, depending on how much you’re willing to pay.

Unfortunately, this system requires you to constantly grind just to keep your weapons. Although, you do have the choice to purchase them permanently. This, however, comes at a rather hefty price: around 150,000 regular Gold currency, or 1000 Gems ($10), the game’s premium currency. I’m all for keeping the game interesting but 150,000 for a single gun is just too much, especially when you only get around 800 Gold for winning a match.

Cash Shop

Aside from weapons, players can also purchase avatars and boosters via the in-game cash shop which is as balanced as you’ll get for a free-to-play shooter. Like most FPS games, skill still plays a big part in winning a match, regardless of what weapon you’re using. The only problem, as I’ve mentioned earlier, is that they’re a little too heavy-handed with their microtransactions. In understand that running a game costs money but they could at least tone it down a bit.

The Final Verdict – Good

For a free-to-play FPS, Line of Sight is definitely one of the best ones I’ve played in a while. The game gets top marks for visual and audio quality, and the ability to use psychic powers is a breath of fresh air from your usual lobby-based shooter. Matches are also fun, fast-paced, and will definitely keep you on your toes. That being said, grinding it out just so you can re-buy your weapons every few days isn’t exactly my cup of tea. Neither is playing more than 100 matches just to earn enough Gold to buy a gun permanently. But, if grinding is your thing then go ahead and give it a shot.

Development History / Background:

Line of Sight is developed and published by BlackSpot Entertainment, a game developer founded in May 2011 comprised of the creators of the original Combat Arms game as well as former employees of nVIDIA and Nexon. A Europe-only closed beta began on May 27, 2015, and ended on June 3, 2015. The game was originally intended to be published by Nexon EU under the title Combat Arms: Line of Sight, but the publisher stepped down citing that the game did not fit with their vision for Combat Arms, and was dropped from their portfolio. Game development continued, leading BlackSpot to release an Early Access version of the game on Steam for $9.99 on September 8, 2016 with the intention of raising money to complete development. The full version of the game was released on January 31, 2017 with a free-to-play microtransaction business model.
