Monkey King Online Review

By Marc Marasigan

Monkey King Online is a microtransaction-based free-to-play (a.k.a. freemium) browser MMORPG inspired by the famous Chinese epic, Journey to the West. The game is currently in the open beta stage and was released on March 28, 2014 under R2 Games, a company known for freemium games such as League of Angels, Wartune, and Blade Hunter.

Starting the Journey

What’s great about browser-based games is that you don’t have to download anything to start playing. Just create an account if you don’t have one, login, and you’re all set. The first thing players see when they login to Monkey King Online is a character creation screen that leaves much to be desired. The game offers a choice of four characters, two male and two female, straight out of Chinese mythology. Play as a beautiful fox demon, an alluring warrior princess, an axe-wielding ox demon, or as the Monkey King himself. I say characters and not classes because they may look different but they all practically have the same play styles. Aside from getting to choose your own name, character customization is virtually non-existent. Players can only have one character per account, which means no alternate characters, so choose wisely. The only way to get around this is to create a new character on a different server or just make a new account.

Upon entering the game world, the first thing that caught my attention was how cluttered the interface is. There are a ton of buttons and menus, like the Mini Map, Quest Logs, Power Ups, Summons, Rewards, a Chatbox, and even ads scattered all over the screen vying for attention. Unfortunately, there is no option to hide these items and the screen just gets more and more cluttered as the game progresses.

The next thing I notice is how wonderfully done the game environments are. Whether you’re turning in quests in a palace in the clouds or battling fiery serpents in lava-filled mountains, the landscape never ceases to impress, especially for a browser-based game. However, the in-game characters could be better. They are done in 2D and one character looks exactly like any other character. Overall, the game’s visuals give a classic RPG feel similar to Diablo II, RAN, and Conquer Online. The graphics, albeit nice for a browser game, aren't unique. Monkey King Online uses the same engine as many other browser-based titles. Those who have played Crystal Saga and League of Angels will notice some similarities.

Autoplay – Easy Mode

Monkey King Online feels incredibly easy with its autoplay feature. Players can simply click on a certain quest then sit back and relax as their characters do all the dirty work, including picking up loot. Player input is still occasionally needed for things like completing quests and buying potions, but the game essentially plays by itself. Experience and gold is ridiculously easy to come by. I let the autoplay system do its work and had a Level 40 character with almost a million gold in about half an hour and I didn’t even die once. Equipment is also fairly easy to acquire and can be automatically equipped by simply clicking a pop-up button that appears when you pick up better gear.

The skill system in Monkey King Online is really simple, and I mean that in a bad way. You automatically unlock set skills every few levels and have the option to upgrade them using gold, which is really easy to get, and Chi, which you can obtain by meditating. Meditation is where you basically just leaving your character sitting down and unattended for extended periods of time. The game also lacks a skill tree which severely limits character customization and replayability. However, getting scantily clad deities to fight for you makes things a bit more enjoyable. These deities are called Immortals and can be unlocked by completing a series of quests.

What MMO would be complete without some way to test your skills against other players? Monkey King Online features a PvP system that can be enabled any time after completing a quest at around Level 30. Players can choose from Team, Guild, Karma, and Kill-All modes. The PvP system is fast-paced and teamwork is encouraged, but with no class builds to speak of, it all boils down to how fast players can spam skills. Cash players also have the balance tipped in their favor with special bonuses and items.

Money Talks

Like other freemium games, special items can be bought using Taels, which can be bought by real world cash. Unfortunately, these items are so overpowered that anyone with some extra cash lying around can beat the game without breaking a sweat. Not that it’s difficult with the autoplay system, but it’s still a relatively big advantage that they could do well without. Real world cash can also be used to obtain VIP status, which gives bonuses on EXP, rewards, and character stats. The more cash you shell out, the higher the bonuses you get. The pay-to-win element is very obvious in both PvE and PvP.

Final Verdict – Fair

Apart from a mildly interesting story, stunning environments, and scantily clad women, Monkey King Online really has nothing going for it. Although the autoplay feature can come in handy when you need to fix up a quick snack or go on a much needed bathroom break, ultimately, I want to be able to play the game and not just watch my character grow rich and powerful with little effort on my part. You do have the option to play on your own, but figuring out what to do or where to go can be quite a chore. The insanely huge advantage that cash players get is also a let-down. This game is worth a try, but don’t get your hopes up.
