Classes

Requiem Classes

There are four races and eight classes available in Requiem: Memento Mori:

Turans can be either Defenders or Templars:

  • Defenders are swift fighters, using mainly one-handed weapons and shields. They can also use two-handed weapons but cannot specialize in them. Using shields, Defenders can become formidable tanks in battle. Upon reaching level 50, Defenders can become Commanders or Protectors.
  • Templars use divine magic, staffs, and maces to combat the forces of darkness. They have weak attack magic, but their ability to heal and use protective magic is strong. Upon reaching level 50, Templars can become Tempests or Radiants.

Bartuks can be either Warriors or Shamans:

  • Warriors use massive, two-handed weapons to cut their enemies asunder. Their skills focus on causing heavy damage, and they are one of the most ferocious classes in battle. Upon reaching level 50, Warriors can become Berserkers or Warlords.
  • Shamans use fire magic and ranged attacks to destroy the abominations of Requiem. They also have magic that adds additional fire damage to their weapons. Upon reaching level 50, Shamans can become Mystics or Forsakers.

Kruxenas can be either Rogues or Soul Hunters:

  • Rogues excel in speed and brutal efficiency. They use claws and dual swords to kill close enemies, but can also use ranged weapons to kill from a distance. Rogues are also masters at avoiding detection, able to move past enemies without being seen. Upon reaching level 50, Rogues can become Assassins or Shadow Roamers.
  • Soul Hunters use spiritual magic that exploits their enemies’ weaknesses. They can curse and weaken foes, and are able to attack from both close and long-range. Upon reaching level 50, Soul Hunters can become Defilers or Dominators.

Xenoas can be either Hunters or Battle Magicians:

  • Hunters attack from a long range, using launchers and bows. They have low physical strength, and prefer to finish enemies before they have a chance to close the distance. Upon reaching level 50, Hunters can become Rangers or Avengers.
  • Battle Magicians use strong magic to decimate enemies, but can also attack viciously with close-range weapons. They can also imbue their weapons with magical damage. Upon reaching level 50, Battle Magicians can become Druids or Elementalists.

Requiem Review

By Dimitri Jordan

Requiem: Memento Mori is a horror-themed MMORPG developed and published by Gravity Interactive that was released on June 19, 2008. In Requiem, players will travel through a terrifying and twisted land full of monstrous abominations. Requiem stands as one of the more unique MMORPGs, with features like Beast Possession making it stand out from most MMOs. Yes, Requiem was made by the same Gravity Interactive that made Ragnarok Online and Rose Online.

Starting Up

When first starting the game, players create their character from one of four races, each with two classes. They can change their face and hair, but there are few options for cosmetic customization. After creating a character, players are sent to a tutorial dungeon, where they learn to move, interact with NPCs, accept quests, use skills, and kill monsters.

The controls for Requiem are similar to many other MMORPGs. Players move by using the WASD keys and can strafe left or right by pressing Q and E respectively. The 1-0 keys are used to assign skills. Players can highlight enemies by left-clicking on them and auto-attack by right-clicking. Players can also press Tab to highlight enemies and F to begin auto-attacking.

The First Few Levels

Jumping into Requiem feels like most other MMORPGs. Players will complete quests that usually center on killing a particular creature and bringing back items they drop or going to other NPCs in the next quest hub. The horror setting and the gore in the battles do help the game to feel fresh. Players will decapitate enemies, limbs and chunks of flesh go flying when they die, and blood coats everything. The enemies themselves are often horrifying, zombie-like, and twisted.

Players gain one skill point every level and several bonus skill points every tenth level (10, 20, 30, etc.) up until the level cap of 90. Players are able to invest in skills as soon as they reach the requisite level, with higher skill levels requiring higher player levels.

In addition to adding skill points, players can invest in DNA. DNA trees passively improve skills. For example, DNA can increase skill effect times, increase damage, or decrease time between casts. Players get 25 DNA points to start. An additional 5 points may be earned from a level 75 quest, and 25 points can be purchased from the Cash Shop.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Requiem: Memento Mori has its moments. Seeing the blood and limbs fly in battles is thrilling, and the atmosphere makes exploring the game world fun. However, there is not much content to the game. The quests do little to further the story or explore the lore, and just feel like excuses to grind various monsters.

The PvP is fun when it works. Because Requiem is an older game, it can be difficult to find enough players for some of the 45 vs 45 games and the full 500 vs 500 server battles are all but impossible to find. The PK system can be fun and those wanting to play as a murderous outlaw will enjoy it.

The more interesting gameplay features are easily the Nightmare monsters and Beast Possession.

Beast Possession is a transformed state where players can become gigantic, hulking creatures with new skills and increased stats. Each race has its own Beast Possession, and they look very different from each other. As Beast Possessions are leveled, they gain skill points and skills of their own. Each Beast unlocks a new skill at level 20, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80. Players can transform into Beasts after filling their Hardcore Gauge, which fills as players are online. Beast Possession lasts for 1 minute until the Beasts reach level 50. Then the limit increases by 1 minute every ten levels, to a max of 5 minutes at Beast level 80.

Nightmare monsters provide a large challenge to Requiem. Nightmare monsters only appear between 23:00 and 2:00 server time, which does not correspond with a full day. Server days are approximately 2 hours long. Nightmare monsters are extremely strong beasts that take entire parties to defeat. Nightmare monsters match the party member’s levels, ensuring that they are always a challenge. Some of the nightmare monsters are also associated with quests.

PvP

The PvP in Requiem: Memento Mori is okay when it works, disappointing when it doesn’t.

Requiem handles individual PvP on a player-killing system. When a normal player attacks another normal player and kills them, they add 1 to the PK count and gain tendency. If a player gains too much tendency, they become a Murderer Temperion. Other players can then kill this player with fewer repercussions, gaining less tendency which reduces their chance of slipping into a “murderer” status.

In addition to PKing, players can engage in Battlefields. There are several battlefields to choose from: Ion Mine, Field of Contention, Theme Battles, and Server vs Server.

The Ion Mine Battlefield is a 30 minute round of Capture-the-Flag, where teams must capture and hold flags in order to gain points. The team with the most points wins. In addition to capturing and holding the flags, players can earn points by killing other players.

Field of Contention is a 20 minute round of PvP. The round ends when one team reaches 100 kills, meaning both teams have a total of 100 lives. This means all players on a team should be able to compete aggressively, as one player dying many times will bring the entire team down.

Theme Battles are like the Ion Mine Battlefield with a twist. Players must capture and hold flags, but may have to fight through monsters or make use of flying mounts to reach the flags. Theme Battles are also scheduled, with each happening one to three times daily.

Server vs Server battles are immense, with up to 500 players from each side being allowed. These battles also have flags, which when captured will give points over time, while kills equal one point. The first team to score 2,000 points, or the one with the most points at the end of the match, wins. However, due to the small playerbase, Requiem’s Server vs. Server matches are largely empty. If a player manages to join an active guild, they may have a chance of actually seeing this mode as it’s meant to be.

While there is a good amount of variety in the PvP, Requiem’s lack of a strong playerbase seriously cripples the enjoyment of the larger-scale modes.

Cash Shop

The Cash Shop in Requiem: Memento Mori offers a variety of consumables, costumes, mounts, and more. The few pieces that players can equip won’t offset gameplay in the event of PvP, as the costumes only add a small amount of HP and MP, as well as slightly raising recovery. They don’t impact stats, so their influence on PvP is minimal. Aside from these, players can buy a range of new mounts, consumables that increase Exp gain, bag slots, or reset skills. Requiem offers enough variety without including items to make gameplay unfair.

Final Verdict - Fair

Requiem: Memento Mori is an average MMORPG masked with a horror theme. The monsters are memorably grotesque, and the dark and mature tone permeates all areas of the game to create a gritty and mature atmosphere. However, low playerbase is a huge detriment to the game, making PvP or even questing in a party difficult to do. When coupled with the low-resolution textures on the landscape, Requiem has some good looking characters traveling through terrible looking lands. Those wanting an MMO experience that differs from the usual elves and magic in saturated woodlands will want to give Requiem a try, but those wanting a solid PvP experience or graphically strong game will want to give Requiem a pass.
