Scions of Fate Review

By Toan Layne

Scions of Fate (known as Yulgang in Asia), is a fantasy MMORPG developed by KRG Soft in South Korea. It was released on November 13, 2006 and later published by Netgame in the United States in early 2007. Despite its 2006 release date, the game had been in open beta testing since 2004 in Asia. It’s very popular in South Korea and China, with over 100 million registered players, but it hasn't enjoyed the same level of recognition in the West. The game sports a distinct Asian theme: much of the music and all of the architecture in game are inspired by the East. Scions of Fate is similar in graphics and gameplay to games like Hero Online, and bills itself as beginner friendly.

Starting Out

Character creation in Scions of Fate is unimpressive, to say the least. Each class has its own distinct hairstyle that unfortunately can’t be changed. Players are also forced to keep the same default face as everyone else, but can choose from a few hair colors and two ‘voice’ options. The voice options can’t even be previewed and they aren’t really used much in game. While the player characters aren’t very diverse, NPCs have varied looks. The environments look expansive, giving the feeling the world is very big, but overall the graphics look old and dated.

After creating a character, players begin the game. There’s no tutorial, so players can start playing right away. Despite this, it’s pretty beginner friendly and easy to pick up on. Navigating Scions of Fate is done entirely through point-and-click, which is great for people who prefer that option, but can be difficult for people who prefer WASD controls.

Scions of Fate is easy to control, but it’s not always easy to understand. There are a lot of translation errors that make playing the game difficult. While it doesn’t affect the overall gameplay, it can make understanding quests a pain. Sometimes I’d look at a quest for minutes before understanding what it wanted me to do.

Quests are very limited, so players will spend most of their time grinding to gain levels. Even with both quests and grinding, the experience gain is slow. As players level, they receive an in-game pop-up telling them about new quests that are available. Around Level 15, experience gain slows down quite a bit and gets even harder later on. Upon closing in on the game’s level cap of 108, it can take upwards of an entire day of casual play to gain a single level.

Limited Skills and Personal Shops

There are no skills available to players until reaching Level 10. This was frustrating, because sometimes skills can be key to certain classes. For example, a healer can’t even use heal until Level 10. Even after hitting Level 10, skills are acquired at a very slow rate. Players only get new skills every few levels. Stats raise automatically when gaining a level and there are no stat points to distribute, which gives players little sense of progression.

Even though skills don’t come by very often, Scions of Fate has a combo system that allows players to combo up to 3 of their skills together in a powerful chain attack. Using it takes more Chi (Scions of Fate’s mana) than using them all individually, but the boost in damage dealing that comes with it is more than worth it.

Scions of Fate has a personal shop option for players who have reached Level 20, which takes the place of the traditional auction system. Personal shops let players put items they have on sale, and make them available for other players to purchase. Any player can buy from a personal shop, but they’re only accessible by one player at a time.

Houses, Factions, and PvP

Guilds in Scions of Fate are called Houses. To create a House, players need to reach Level 35 and pay 1 million gold.

Houses can gain levels by getting House fame. House fame is the sum of experience the members have and members of the House get rewards based on their level. For example, at the 2nd level, members get a House uniform. Houses can also participate in special PvP events against other Houses. Those worried about balance and fairness will be happy to know that the system will match Houses against those of similar level.

At Level 35, players have a choice to side with one of two factions: The Order or The Chaos. Despite their names, there is no distinctively “bad” or “good” faction; instead The Order sticks to the rules and The Chaos choose to live freely. Each faction has their own unique clothes that players get after choosing a faction. Players get new outfits every ten levels.

Not only does Scions of Fate have a dueling PvP option, which can only been done in special PvP zones starting at Level 35, but it also sports a few other PvP options as well. Other PvP options include House Wars, Authority Clash, and C.C.R. Each PvP type has it’s own set of rules; for example, in C.C.R, factions see who can take a flag from a monster first.

Enchantments

The enchantment system has a few variations that players can do to upgrade their weapons. All of these require special gems. The chance of success decreases after every attempt. Players can use emeralds or sapphires to enchant items two to four times. Gems are dropped from monsters. There are also rubies that can be used to enchant weapons and armor. If the enchanting is successful, a player’s armor will have +3 to defense and weapons will have a +6 to attack. This method lets players enchant up to 10 times. The third gem is amethyst. When enchanted, this gem gives equipment special effects, such as increased attack speed.

Final Verdict: Poor

Scions of Fate has a lot of potential, but it falls flat. The graphics are dated, it’s poorly translated, lacks quests, and the frustrating skill system makes it hard to feel absorbed into the game. It does have some nice features, such as a powerful enchantment system and a variety of PvP options. While Scions of Fate may have had its place earlier in the century, it is just too dated to compete in the MMORPG market today.
