Overview

Spellgear Overview

Spellgear was originally a buy-to-play, later free to play, fantasy action MMORPG set in an expansive open world and features action-oriented combat, MOBA-inspired arenas, dungeons, questing, and more. One of the primary features of the game is its skill-based combat, requiring players to manually target their enemies and dodge attacks with no automatic targeting system. Thanks to its skill-based battling, the game's MOBA-inspired PvP offers a competitive arena to test out your skills as well as open world PvP between the game's two factions. Fight against the enemy team in instanced PvP with a variety of game modes including Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Classic, featuring MOBA elements such as towers, minions, and bases. Choose between one of the game's three classes: Tamer, Paladin, or Ranger, then swap abilities and weapons freely with players to utilize the abilities of other classes. Other features of the game include a well-developed in-game economy, a main quest chain, a PvP hub, player housing, clans, and more.

Spellgear Key Features:

  • Skill-based Action Combat – rely on your skills to accurately attack enemies and dodge their fire by using your mouse to determine the direction of your actions.
  • MOBA-Inspired PvP Arenas – take part in PvP matches inspired directly by popular MOBAs, including elements such as minions, towers, and bases.
  • Massive Open World – explore the large world of Astarma, inhabited by many diverse creatures and denizens across two large islands.
  • Swap Weapons and Abilities Freely – choose between Tamer, Paladin, or Ranger, then freely swap weapons in combat with other players to gain use of other class abilities.
  • Variety of PvE and PvP Content – explore group dungeons, partake in open world PvP, fight in a variety of arena modes, explore treacherous crusades, and more.

Development History / Background:

Spellgear is developed by RIC and SkyRiver Studios, and published by RIC and Bitbox Ltd. Posted on Steam Greenlight on December 11, 2015, the game was successfully greenlit on December 24, 2015 by the Steam community. The game released on Steam Early Access on August 19, 2016 with a fee of $19.99. Amidst issues of having a near-nonexistent community in a PvP-focused game, it later went free-to-play on February 4, 2017, just six months into Early Access. The game retained the free-to-play business model when it launched on April 7, 2017. The game was abandoned by the developer as of May 16, 2017 with no notice given to players.
