Tencent has gobbled up yet another development studio as the Chinese media giant buys out Slamfire and its subsidiaries including Back 4 Blood developer Turtle Rock Studios.

According to Turtle Rock’s press release, they will still be operating independently and will continue to be run by their original founders, Chris Ashton and Phil Robb. With Tencent’s support Turtle Rock says that will be able to grow their team and build on their experiences with Back 4 Blood to develop exciting new multiplayer games. The studio also assured Back 4 Blood fans that they’ll continue to work on the franchise well into the future with plans to expand the universe into a long-standing AAA franchise.

“We are huge fans of Turtle Rock’s games, especially their amazing approach to creating co-operative online games,” said Eddie Chan, Chief Strategy Officer for Tencent Games Global. “We can’t wait to see what comes next, and we’re excited to be part of their future.”

Tencent has slowly and steadily become a major player in the video game industry through various studio acquisitions over the past couple of years. In addition to Slamfire and Turtle Rock, the company also owns Riot Games, Fatshark, and Funcom and is currently brokering a deal with Sumo Group to acquire the British video game developer.

Tencent also has shares in other big name video game companies including Activision Blizzard, Bluehole Studios, and Epic Games, as well as in smaller one like Frontier Developments, Paradox Interactive, Supercell, and more recently, Playtonic.
