Blizzard Entertainment Reveals Team And Role Changes In Overwatch 2

overwatch 2 reinhardt buildings bannerBlizzard Entertainment revealed some very juicy details about Overwatch 2 during yesterday’s dev stream, including how they plan to change up the current meta. The team plans to do this by adjusting the team size and changing the role that tanks play in the PvP shooter.

“The core Overwatch PvP experience will shift from six players per team to five players per team,” the team explained in a follow-up blog. “In the standard PvP game modes of Overwatch 2, each team will contain one Tank, two Damage, and two Support heroes. This evolution introduces a major shift in the way that the team approaches all aspects of the game, from map design to the dynamics between roles and how they interact as a team.”

According to the studio, the goal is to encourage tanks to become more aggressive and shift them more towards being a brawler rather than simply absorbing damage for the team. Aside from changes to tanks, Role Passives will also be implemented in the highly-awaited sequel. These new passives will give damagers access to speed boosts and give support heroes the ability to regenerate health when out of combat.

At the heart of this change lies the change in mentality surrounding the role of Tank, previously discussed during BlizzConline, towards one more focused on brawler-style gameplay,” said Blizzard. “This shift from focusing on the protection of your team to in-your-face battling is anticipated to have impacts to the flow and pacing of the PvP experience.”

The team also previewed the new Push game mode along with a few of the new city maps during the stream, which you’ll find in its entirety just down below. Enjoy!
