Red 5 Studios was founded by Mark Kern in 2006 and is composed mainly of former executives, developers, and employees of Blizzard Entertainment. The company’s founders performed various roles in the development of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, from Team Leader to overseeing operations in Asia. In March of 2010, The9, a Chinese online game developer, bought majority shares of Red 5 Studios for an estimated $20 Million. The company is currently working on their first ever MMO, Firefall, in collaboration with Orson Scott Card, author of Enders Game, as the game’s story writer. The company also worked with Card to create a manga novel co-written by his daughter, Emily Janice Card.  Towards the end of September 2011, Red 5 Singapore became a wholly owned subsidiary of The9 and took over publishing rights from Webzen in all other countries worldwide outside of the US, Canada and Europe. Red 5 Singapore was also formed to oversee operations in Asia. The company has also recently announced their plan to open a new office in Ireland dedicated to localization and support of the European version of Firefall.
