It turns out that the most feared adversary in Helldivers 2 isn’t the giant bug-like aliens running amok across the galaxy, but a guy named Joel, a name that’s bound to strike fear into Helldiver hearts from here on end. No, he’s not the bug emperor, (although we might have to start calling him that), but the guy pulling the strings as the game’s Live Game Master.

Arrowhead Games CEO Johan Pilestedt decided to finally introduce Joel after players started bickering and blaming each other for hindering global progression for certain missions, particularly the defense of a key planet called Malevelon Creek. Apparently, it was all Joel’s handiwork as he schemed late into the night to throw players off with “twists and turns” much like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.

As the official Game Master, he had full control of each and every mission and how difficult they can be. “We have a lot of systems built into the game where the Game Master has a lot of control over the play experience,” Pilestedt said. “It's something that we're continuously evolving based on what's happening in the game.”

Pilestedt added that the team keeps a close eye on how certain scenarios play out, like the loss at Malevelon Creek, so that they can potentially use them to build a dynamic overarching storyline. Now that the secret is out, players can’t be more excited that an actual person is controlling the game and are actually looking forward to other shenanigans that the mighty Joel will be orchestrating in the future.
