Jagex confirmed earlier reports that its being sold off by its current owner, The Carlyle Group, to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners in an official press release. After “exclusive negotiations” the CVC Capital has agreed to acquire the RuneScape developer for an undisclosed amount, although its reportedly around €900 million, or roughly $1.13 billion.

“CVC Capital Partners will support Jagex by leveraging its expertise and resources to assist the company’s continued subscriber and revenue growth, alongside its community driven philosophy as it looks to build upon the success of RuneScape and Old School RuneScape and create more forever games under the Jagex brand,” reads the press release.

The acquisition marks the fourth time that Jagex has changed hands in the last eight years and has nearly tripled in value since then. The studio heads up several subsidiaries, including Terraria developer Pipeworks Studios and Gamepires, the studio behind multiplayer survival game SCUM.

Other interested buyers, however, were reportedly reluctant to purchase the studio at its current value due to “uncertainty about the company’s business plan and development pipeline.” It seems that CVC Capital and company doesn’t share the same view.
