Sci-Fi MMORPG Perpetuum Is Shutting Down On Jan 25

According to an official 2018 Status Report, Perpetuum will be shutting down after more than 7 years of live service. The science fiction themed MMORPG had players manning giant mechs in a single, open world environment.

Many compared the game to Eve Online. Like Eve, character progression in Perpetuum was time based and the open PvP ruleset made player cooperation essential. But unlike Eve, Perpetuum was action oriented and took place on the ground.

Those who missed their chance to try this buy to play MMORPG need not fret. A kind Dev known as DEV Crm has volunteered to keeping the database up and running on his private server. Server speed nor consistent availability is guaranteed. Oddly, the now maintenance-mode game will still be available for purchase on Steam for $4.99 after the January 25 shut down date. The Perpetuum Dedicated Server (single player mode) will also remain available via Steam.

While we are sad to see another MMORPG go, the Perpetuum team has done a commendable job in keeping the game around for archival purposes. Larger MMO studios could learn a lot from how this retirement was handled. Archiving a game in this manner shows respect for both the art and for the community.
