Angels Overview

Angels Online is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG released in 2007. The setting of the game is Eden, a mythical location from the bible, and in this case a land where humans and angels reside. Players start in the Lyceum, a school to train angels, and must train to fight the minions of Lucifer, the fallen archangel who wants to overthrow Eden and the reign of Jupiter. Angels Online still gets updated from time to time despite having launched back in 2007.

Classes

  • Assassins have a stealth skill, allowing them to become invisible to enemies before attacking from the shadows.
  • Priests are the main healing and buff class, making them invaluable to a party. Alone, however, they tend to be pretty weak.
  • Summoners use dark magic, and can summon the undead to aid them in combat.
  • Wizards are the heavy damage dealers of the magic classes. Their spells deal direct damage, and can drain their mana very quickly.
  • Magicians have a mix of offensive and defensive spells, giving a good balance to play a versatile role.
  • Protectors have the highest defense and health of all the classes, and act as the tanks of Angels Online.
  • Warriors deal the most melee damage, have plenty of health, and are able to dual-wield axes and hammers in combat.
  • Swordsmen excel at speed and can deal a fair amount of damage in seconds, however they have lower defense and health than the other melee classes.
  • Spearmen are able to pierce through enemy armor and deal high damage. They have relatively low health, but their higher mana helps for using abilities more often.
  • Archers can deal physical damage from a distance, but up close they become less effective.
  • Weapon Craftsmen are able to create powerful weapons, harvest precious ore, and control robots.
  • Armor Craftsmen are able to forge armors, as well as control robots.
  • Tailors can create mage and leather armors, fish, and control robots.
  • Technicians can tinker to create robot accessories and ornamentations, as well as control robots.
  • Chefs are able to produce a variety of foods that enhance the user’s abilities. They can collect raw materials, fish, and control robots.

Angels Online Review

By Dimitri Jordan

Angels Online, also known as Angel ‘Love’ Online, is a 2D Fantasy MMORPG developed by UserJoy Technology and published by IGG. It was released in June 2006, with a localized US version released in 2007. Its simple, cartoonish graphics and poor translation may not rank it high among most MMORPG players 'must-play' list, but Angels Online has one of the most expansive class lists available, and a strong emphasis on crafting not seen in many other games.

Starting Up
When first starting Angels Online, players may be struck by how many options they have for character customization. Twelve hairstyles, thirty-six hair colors, and twenty-seven skin colors allow players to make the character they want, and the option to upload an avatar picture is a nice touch not seen in most games. Players also choose their character’s birthday, zodiac sign, blood type, country, job, personality, and a unique trait to define their face, though these selections make no cosmetic changes. It should be noted that while there are three slots for character creation, players are only able to create one character per server, and will have to buy character expansion slots in order to use all three spaces.

The 2D look and art style of Angels Online is reminiscent of Ragnarok Online, with an overhead camera and flat, polished background images. Players move by clicking the ground, and can hold down the left mouse button for continued movement. One little feature to help players is the auto-walk feature that triggers after holding the mouse button for a few seconds. After that, the character will continue walking in whatever direction the mouse is in, until the player clicks the ground again.

Unfortunately, customization stops short of the actual game interface. Players are unable to rebind their skill keys, and are stuck with F1-F12, which by default for most keyboards in the United States adjusts settings like screen brightness and volume. Further, there are few options for the settings. Only two resolutions are supported, and though it has the option for windowed or fullscreen, any attempts to fullscreen the game ended with it crashing.

The First Few Levels
Almost immediately, players are able to choose their class in Angels Online. This is especially helpful because of the large number of classes, if players decide they don’t like their class, starting over and choosing a different one will only take minutes instead of hours or days. The class level cap is 200, which is obtained solely through experience, while player skills are leveled a different way.

The skill system in Angels Online is simple, and a change from the usual skill trees. Skills level passively, meaning the more a skill is used, the more proficient the users becomes. For example, if a Wizard casts Magic Bomb, their Chaos Magic skill gains experience, allowing them to learn stronger spells in that discipline. Being attacked while wearing cloth armor raises the Vestments skill, and using the staff raises the Staff Hit skill. However, some players may dislike this system, as abilities and attributes level without any user input. Skills are capped at level 190, and players are able to max out all if their skills, or just the ones they prefer using.

The tutorial leads players through choosing a class, and then they’re sent to the Lyceum. This is the training school for angels, where players will learn about the different features of Angels Online, as well as gain their first levels. Players must complete quests in order to earn credit hours to graduate. Easier quests may give one credit hour, while harder ones will give three. Players need at least five credit hours to graduate, but those who earn fifteen credits will have access to a special quest to summon and defeat Qiuaner. After completing this, they are rewarded with a good weapon and a Top Student Graduation Certificate. This path is unnecessary for crafter classes, as they’re unable to use weapons.

Classes
There are six melee classes, five crafting classes, and four magic classes in Angels Online. This blows most of the competition out of the water in terms of variety, and helps players find the perfect fit for them. This continues on to the skills, as only those that are used will increase in level. It lacks the impact of assigning skill points manually, but also allows players to use abilities and disciplines that they find most useful instead of arbitrary skill trees, locking players into gaining abilities to advance.

Each of the fighting classes has access to several disciplines, each with skills of its own. On top of this, players are able to mix skills - for example, making a Spearman who can use Chaos magic. This leads to some interesting combinations, and further increases the already impresses variety found in Angels Online’s class system.

Crafting
Crafting plays a large role in Angels Online, which has five different classes dedicated to it. While all classes can harvest raw materials, only Weapon Craftsmen, Armor Craftsmen, Technicians, Chefs, and Tailors have the skill necessary to make items from these ingredients. These classes also have access to large, robotic vehicles that speed up the gathering process.

These classes are perfect second characters for those willing to buy additional character slots, or perfect main characters for those who want to try following a different path than killing a certain amount of monsters for quests. They are able to create some of the best gear and restorative items in the game, and players can become quite rich by offering their services to other players for a price.

PvP
PvP in Angels Online is usually played endgame content. There are three modes: Angel Arena, Holy Battlefield, and Totem Battle.

Angel Arena is the only mode that's level-locked, with players needing to be at least level 60 to participate. Further, there is an entrance fee, starting at 100,000 Angel Coins for levels 60-69, and increasing with each grouping. Once players are signed up for the event, they are automatically teleported directly to the battlefield when the event starts. If more than ten participants are alive at the end of the event, they are all automatically killed. If there is a final ten before time runs out, they advance to the last stage of the Angel Arena. There they place in order as they are killed, with the first one dead winning 10th place, while the last one alive is in 1st. After the event, they receive certificates to turn in for their awards.

Holy Battlefield pits two teams against each other. While the fighting classes can receive points for killing members of the opposite team, crafting classes can instead build or destroy city gates and statues to earn points for their team. This is a clever way to incorporate these classes with no emphasis on fighting.

In Totem Battle, players fight hour-long battles to control totems on different maps, adding territory to the four different factions. In addition to winning more territory and rewards, players will be able to travel more freely between their territory and main cities, with NPCs that teleport them being placed at both locations.

Final Verdict - Good
Despite its flaws, Angels Online is one of the more unique MMORPGs on the market. With a biblical background, an emphasis on crafting, and a large variety of classes, there is room for many different kinds of players. The translations are almost indecipherable at times, but players that stick with the game won't be disappointed, as there's always something to do.
