Overview

Ashen Empires Overview

Ashen Empires is a free-to-play sandbox MMORPG with similarities to many classic games in the genre, including Runescape and Ultima Online. Players begin the game by creating a character from one of three races: Humans, Night Elves, or Orcs, and four stats that can be allocated for character builds. Characters begin on an island reserved for newbies level 1-7 where tutorial NPCs give advice on gameplay elements and trainers allow players to pick weapons and profession skills, which determine their role in a classless game world. The game's combat is simplistic, triggered by clicking on an enemy while in combat stance, with a player protection feature that warns players before they cause damage to an NPC. One of the game's primary focuses is tradeskills, which allow players to level up through gathering and crafting without the need to fight enemies. Some other features include guild housing, seventy-one unique skills, boats, house building and ownership, and more.

Ashen Empires Key Features:

  • Sandbox Gameplay – play however you want, using whatever weapons, race, professions you desire to explore the game world and gain experience.
  • Three Playable Races – play as Humans, Night Elves, or Orcs, each with their own hub city, animations, and lore.
  • Crafting Focus – level from one to cap focusing purely on item crafting and gathering in a game that offers professions as an alternative to grinding.
  • PvP and PvE Server – join the Legends server for PvE play with PvP limited to arenas, or join the Heroes server for all-out PvP in the open world.
  • Classic MMORPG – enter a retro game experience similar to Ultima Online that requires pen and paper to keep track of quests, and sparse graphics that leave much of the game world to player imagination.

Open Beta Date: September 2002

Release Date: March 10, 2003

Development History / Background:

Ashen Empires, formerly known as Dransik, was developed by AsylumSoft Inc. and published by TKO Software, a California-based publisher founded in 2002, publisher of a variety of licensed mobile titles. Ashen Empires was released for free as an open beta in 2002 and then officially released in 2003 with a pay-to-play model. The game required a monthly subscription that was later turned into a modified free-to-play model that allowed free users to play with a variety of restrictions. Some of the restrictions included highly limited experience gain, few available tradeskills, and mostly unavailable social systems. TKO Software then sold the rights of the game to Iron Will Games in 2004, a game developer formed from AsylumSoft and the game's original creators to escape the issues found in the corporate game industry. In 2008, its free user restrictions were relaxed and finally removed in 2009 when the game no longer required a subscription for content access, leaving a cash shop that allows for in-game bonuses such as bag expansions.

Three expansions were released for Ashen Empires that expanded on game features and the player level cap. The first expansion released was Talazar's Revenge which allowed players to advance to level 105 and visit the northern area of the game world; the second expansion released was Sands of Creation, allowing advancement to 110, more high level areas, and building construction. Tides of Fate is the third expansion, allowing players to explore the oceans within the game and perform Feats.
