Bleach online is a 2D fantasy-themed, browser-based MMORPG from GoGames, a new game publisher from China devoted to bringing engaging and immersive online games to players everywhere. The game went into open beta on July 14, 2014.

The game is set in the world of the popular Bleach anime/manga series where the player takes on the role of a Soul Reaper, powerful agents of the afterlife charged with governing the flow of souls from the human world. Players begin by suffering a bad injury from a random battle and are saved by Captain Yamamoto, the head of the afterlife. Having slept for a thousand years, the player wakes up with no memories and is sent to the Human world to regain his lost memories. There, they will meet and team up with Ichigo, the hero of the series, and his friends. Despite taking place in the Bleach universe, the game's story and events are not a part of the official Bleach canon. In fact, the game itself is an unlicensed Bleach MMO developed and operated by the Chinese company GoGames.

Character Creation

Bleach Online, like most free-to-play browser games, features a fairly simple character creation process. Players choose from three pre-made classes and two gender choices for each class. After which they also create a Nemu, a character that guides the player and gives advice throughout the game. Surprisingly, a Nemu has much more customization options than main characters. Players have the ability to customize their Nemu’s hair, clothing, and personality.

Recovering Lost Memories

After creating characters, players start the game in the Human World where they meet Ichigo and his friends, who will walk them through the features of the game. Completing the tutorial gives players access to the other features including quests and a hilarious “Beauty” game. Quests in Bleach Online operate just like any other MMORPG, where players pick up quests from NPCs, kill the required amount of mobs, then run back to the NPC to claim their reward. Rinse and repeat. Running back and forth between NPCs has been made a lot easier thanks to the game’s auto-path feature. The game also features a fun, hilarious, and rewarding bikini mini-game which requires players to sign-in daily in order to unlock more girls to strip down to their bikinis. No wonder the game has such a huge playerbase! Everyone wants to see their favorite Bleach characters in their skivvies. On that note, it's worth mentioning that a lot of the female characters in the game are extremely over sexualized. Sort of like Scarlet Blade, but with 2D browser-based graphics instead.

In addition to their main characters, players can also recruit popular characters from the series to help them on their quest. Party members can be recruited in exchange for Reaper Souls, which can be earned through another mini-game in the tavern. Reaper Souls come in three types: Vanguards, with high defense, Assaults, with high damage, and Supports, who can heal and buff allies. These party members, like the player’s character, can be equipped with weapons and gear to make them stronger. Since combat in Bleach Online is a fully automated turn-based system, the only thing that players can control is how their party members are positioned in combat. The front row takes the brunt of the damage and is recommended for tougher members while the back row is more suited for damage dealers with weaker defenses.

PvP

Players can enter the arena upon reaching Level 24, where they can challenge and fight other players within 10 levels of their current level but not below 24. Winners of Arena matches are rewarded with Silver, the in-game currency, and Prestige points that determine a players rank in PvP. A five-minute cooldown is put into effect after each PvP challenge. Given that the game's cash shop sells very powerful items, PvP is completely broken and unfair. Those that spend money have huge advantages over free-to-play users.

Player Housing & Girlfriends

Bleach Online also has a simple player housing system where players can kick back and relax. Homes start at a lowly level of "apartment" and can be upgraded to be more spacious. One funny aspect of the game's housing system is that players have an NPC girlfriend waiting for them at their homes. Daily interactions provide your character bonuses, so checking up on your girlfriend is well worth it in Bleach Online. What makes the girlfriend system even better is that players can "upgrade" their girlfriends, or rather, trade them in for better ones. And by better, I mean "bustier". Just look at this girlfriend upgrade scene in the screenshot below. I thought it was pretty hilarious.

Love is the Only Gold

Bleach Online features a mixed subscription and microtransaction payment model. Players can purchase VIP status, buy premium items, or both. Purchasing VIP status gives players potentially game-breaking advantages such as faster leveling, free gear, and significantly better rewards for quests. The Cash Shop, on the other hand, contains items that run the risk of being labeled as OP such as equipment, gear, as well as rare and powerful party members. Cash players also tend to own pretty much everyone in PvP matches.

Final Verdict – Fair

Bleach Online is a solid game with a great storyline, passable graphics, and good audio. The game’s automated combat and auto-pathing system, however, is what turns me off. Watching my character run around and fight mobs without any control on my part, aside from the occasional mouse-click, isn’t exactly my idea of fun. Fans of the series might find a few hours of enjoyment, especially with the mini-games, but overall, there are far too many other good games out there to recommend Bleach Online. Still, those that don't mind the automated combat can look forward to countless hours of fun with Bleach Online.
