Overview

Final Fantasy XI Overview

Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) is a subscription-based MMORPG that is part of the famous Final Fantasy series, developed and published by Square Enix. It was made available on three platforms (Windows, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360), of which only the Windows version is currently still available. FFXI features a story-rich MMORPG experience with quests, missions, and conquests offering specific objectives. Choose from five races and six initial jobs to create a character. Jobs are not locked, meaning players can change between the 22 available jobs to fit their needs as they go. Group up with others to form parties and work together to take down common foes. Up to three parties can form one alliance, resulting in a unique 18-person battle system. Learn unique weapon skills, which are like powerful ultimate moves, with mastery over certain weapon types. Gather unique weapons and gear from battlefields; the harder the battle, the better the reward. Other features of FFXI include a trading system, auction houses, and a crafting system (Crystal Synthesis).

Final Fantasy XI Key Features:

  • Seriously Story-Driven – FFXI does not fail to deliver on the signature story-rich aspect of the Final Fantasy franchise. Players will find themselves engrossed in the world of Vana’diel through the intricate web of great storytelling.
  • Unique Gear and Appearances – players have the option of five unique races with decent character customization, along with gear that is not just merely re-colored armor. Enjoy outfits and gear ranging from gosh-darned cute to insanely cool to set your hero apart.
  • Non-Static Classes – choose to hop between jobs, mastering each one and recognizing when a particular class is needed.
  • Rewarding Party Play – party dynamics are well-balanced and rewarding as players must work as a team in order to efficiently defeat common foes.
  • Tons of Content – with five expansions, multiple add-ons, and the fact that the game was released over 10 years ago, players will find that there is much to keep them occupied in FFXI.

Development History / Background:

Final Fantasy XI is a subscription-based MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix. It is the very first cross-platform MMORPG to be released. FFXI was originally released for Sony's PlayStation 2 platform on May 16, 2002 in Japan. However, sales struggled due to the additional hard drive and network adapters required to play on the PS2. The PC platform was later introduced that same year in November. The game first hit NA markets through the PC platform in October 2003, and EU markets in September 2004. FFXI then became available for Microsoft's Xbox 360 platform in April 2006 globally. Much later, a version was also released through Valve's Steam service in April 2013.

Square Enix closed the service for both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 platforms on March 31, 2016. There is also a mobile port based off of FFXI called Final Fantasy Grandmasters, free-to-play, available exclusively in Japan for Android and iOS. Square Enix is currently working with Nexon to develop a full-fledged FFXI for the mobile platforms to be released in 2016.
