Habbo Overview

Habbo (previously known as Habbo Hotel) is a teenage-focused social MMO that has been one of the largest social networking platforms for many years since its release in 2001. The game boasts over 300 million avatars over its nine online communities, branching across over 150 countries. Gameplay is focused primarily on interaction between players, that is utilized through the game’s on-screen chat and private chats. Players can move their avatars between different rooms of the hotel, meeting new people in every room, with some rooms offering mini-games or social themes. Habbo also has quests that unlock game features, such as virtual pets or the ability to create your own room, as well as premium-only features that boast tons of clothing, furniture, and character effects that allow players full cosmetic control over their house and avatar.

Habbo Key Features:

  • Fully Customizable Avatars – Dress up your avatar in a multitude of colors, clothing, hairstyles, skin colors and faces to express yourself—with more options unlockable with the game’s premium currency, Credits.
  • Room Building – Join the Builders Club and borrow furniture for a limited amount of time to make your own room come to life, or spend Credits to purchase furniture permanently, then make it available for all of the residents of Habbo to visit.
  • Pet System – Purchase and collect pets that can join a room and interact with users, as well as be bred to create more pets and be trained to respond to commands.
  • Mini-Games – Rooms can sometimes contain games made by players, or officially-supported games made by the developer, which can reward prizes to winners.
  • Massive Playerbase – One of the largest social networking communities in the world; players will never be out of users to hang out with.

Habbo is developed and published by Sulake, a Finnish corporation specializing in social entertainment. The game stems back to 1999, where Habbo began as a virtual chat room for a Finnish band, evolving quickly into a Hotel-themed game in 2000. They were approached by entrepreneurs to create it into a fully international business, launching its beta in 2001. It was first released in England, and then Switzerland, slowly becoming available in four languages in over 150 different countries. The game was highly successful in most places, closing only in China and Scandanavia, and drew the attention of Anonymous, an internet-based group that raided Habbo endlessly in 2006, accusing Habbo mods of racism. Later, in 2012, media attention was brought to Habbo due to its brimming popularity and relatively un-moderated chat rooms. Parents came to realize that Habbo was filled with player-generated content that was too mature for its target age group, and demanded more moderation due to an excess of sexually explicit behavior between and towards under-aged teens. The game was globally muted in response to this on June 12, 2012, when the developers focused on making it a safer environment, adding chat filters and more moderators to the game, unmuting it on July 6, 2012. The game was released for iOS in 2014 and Android in 2015, allowing players access to Habbo while on the go.
