Khan: Absolute Power Review

By, Aey Igh

Khan: Absolute Power is a 3D fantasy MMORPG developed by the South Korean gaming studio Mirinae. Originally released in 2003, the game made its way to Steam in 2016, bringing with it the hope of reigniting the magic of the early days of MMORPGs. However, as we dive into the world of Khan, it becomes apparent that the game's age and lack of modern refinements make it difficult for the title to stand up against the current MMORPG giants.

Starting off in the world of Khan

Upon launching Khan: Absolute Power, players are greeted with a character creation screen reminiscent of early 2000s gaming. With a limited selection of classes and customization options, it becomes clear that the game's age will be a recurring theme throughout the experience. That being said, the uniqueness of some classes, such as the Necromancer and the Sorcerer, may pique the interest of players looking for something different from the traditional MMORPG archetypes.

After a brief tutorial, players are set loose in the world of Khan. The game wastes no time thrusting players into a grind-heavy experience as they struggle to make sense of the dated UI, clunky controls, and obscure quest objectives.

Graphics / UI

It's no secret that Khan: Absolute Power's graphics are significantly dated. The low-resolution textures, stiff animations, and rudimentary character models make it challenging for the game to compete visually with modern MMORPGs. While some players may find nostalgia in the dated visuals, it's evident that the game would benefit from a graphical overhaul to appeal to a broader audience.

The user interface is another aspect of Khan: Absolute Power that suffers from the game's age. Cluttered and unintuitive, the UI presents an immediate hurdle for new players as they navigate menus and attempt to decipher the purpose of various icons. The lack of customization options for the UI exacerbates these issues, forcing players to adapt to the antiquated design rather than tailoring the interface to their preferences.

Progression

Progression in Khan: Absolute Power follows the classic MMORPG formula of questing, grinding, and acquiring new gear. However, the game's outdated design and excessive focus on grinding make the leveling experience feel like a chore rather than an enjoyable journey. Quests often lack variety and context, leading players to mindlessly slay hordes of enemies in pursuit of experience points and loot.

Khan: Absolute Power's skill system offers some semblance of depth, with players able to choose from a wide array of abilities and enhancements as they level up. However, the clunky UI makes it difficult to fully appreciate and understand the intricacies of the skill system.

Point and Click Generic Combat

Combat in Khan: Absolute Power is perhaps the most significant aspect of the game that suffers from its dated design. The game employs a classic point-and-click combat system, which, while functional, feels sluggish and unresponsive compared to the more dynamic combat systems found in modern MMORPGs. Furthermore, the game's AI often exhibits erratic behavior, leading to frustrating encounters as enemies unpredictably disengage or ignore players entirely.

The PvP aspect of Khan: Absolute Power offers some respite from the lackluster PvE combat. Players can engage in large-scale guild battles, known as "Castle Sieges," where strategy and coordination become key factors in achieving victory. Unfortunately, the dated graphics and clunky combat prevent these battles from reaching their full potential.

A Blast from the Past

Khan: Absolute Power is a nostalgic trip into the early days of MMORPGs, but its dated visuals, clunky gameplay, and unintuitive UI make it difficult for the game to compete in the modern gaming landscape. For those seeking a taste of the past or a simple, grind-heavy experience, Khan: Absolute Power may provide some appeal. However, for players expecting the refinements and innovations present in contemporary MMORPGs, the game's shortcomings will likely prove frustrating.

While the unique class system and large-scale PvP battles offer glimpses of the game's potential, they are ultimately overshadowed by the numerous issues stemming from the game's age. The lack of a graphical overhaul, coupled with the absence of quality-of-life improvements, prevents Khan: Absolute Power from truly capitalizing on the nostalgia factor it attempts to embrace.

For players seeking a classic MMORPG experience, there are alternative options that provide similar gameplay while benefiting from modern updates and refinements. Titles such as Old School RuneScape or EverQuest maintain their old-school charm while offering a more polished and engaging experience.

Final Verdict - Fair

Khan: Absolute Power is a testament to the early days of MMORPGs, showcasing the potential that existed during the genre's infancy. Unfortunately, the game's dated visuals, clunky gameplay, and unintuitive UI hinder its ability to appeal to modern gamers. While nostalgia may draw some players to Khan: Absolute Power, the lack of polish and the numerous frustrations that arise from the game's antiquated design ultimately limit its potential to recapture the magic of its early days.
