MachineCraft Overview
Your imagination is the only limit to what you can create in the 3D crafting game MachineCraft. Use a variety of parts to come up with your own crazy creations, from rotor-powered cars to gigantic gun-toting robots. Make use of fully-functional moving parts such as wheels, shafts, and various weapon systems to create more complex, and destructive, machines. Test out your inventions against AI-controlled bots in a variety of sandbox environments or join servers and take them out for a test drive with players from all over the globe in custom-built worlds.

MachineCraft is a 3D sandbox-style crafting game that allows players to craft virtually anything they can imagine using a variety of blocks and fully-functional moving parts then battle it out with other players in player-constructed sandbox worlds. The game is similar to Robocraft, another 3D crafting game. Although in comparison, MachineCraft’s graphics quality is slightly lower than that of its competitor even though both games were coded using the Unity engine. MachineCraft also lacks background music and features sound effects that are generic at best.
YouTube? Really?
MachineCraft is one of those games that you just can’t pick up and play. The game mechanics are easy enough to grasp, just build whatever comes to mind. Not knowing which parts are used for what is what makes the game a bit difficult to learn. Trial and error works but is definitely time-consuming. Time that would have been better spent designing that cute pink robo-cat or the ultimate robot of destruction. A playable tutorial that explains each part in detail would’ve been helpful. As it is though, players are stuck with a couple of YouTube tutorials, and poorly translated ones at that.
Cannon-firing Digital Legos
MachineCraft, is one of the handful of 3D crafting games that have moved away from the simple voxel-based gameplay that made Minecraft famous in favor of better and smoother graphics, as well as more complicated moving parts such as shafts, rotors, and articulated joints, much like a digital Lego Technic set. Players can build almost anything using the variety of parts at their disposal, from simple flying cubes to giant gun-toting robots worthy of a Japanese sentai show. The only limit is your imagination. And unlike regular Lego sets cleanup is a breeze.
Players can also test out their crazy inventions against an AI bot or against other players in one of the pre-made testing fields or in custom-built worlds. Which, if I might add, is half the fun especially when several players start blasting each other away with weapon-equipped robots. This is assuming that you happen to find an active server which is next to impossible because of the low playerbase. The ability to construct custom worlds, however, needs to first be unlocked by completing the required number of stages in Challenge mode.
Challenge Mode
Challenge mode allows players to test out their building skills by completing a series of challenges with varying objectives, from simple tasks such as transporting gigantic balls from one point to another, to more difficult ones like beating a timed course using a limited number of thrusters on your car, flying boat, or whatever vehicle you decide to use in the challenge. Completing a certain number of stages also unlocks additional game content such as Expert mode and the ability to create custom worlds. The challenges are fun and, honestly, a bit frustrating especially when you constantly fail to complete one of the challenges.
The Final Verdict – Fair
MachineCraft is a game with a lot of potential and is one of the rare free-to-play games without a cash shop. Everything is offered for the gaming community’s enjoyment without asking for anything in return. And from an indie development studio no less. So hats off to the devs. The ability to create wacky creations of mass destruction is all well and good but with no one to test them on except for AI, things get old really fast. The challenge mode is also only good for a couple of hours of gameplay before boredom strikes. If you have no qualms about playing alone, then by all means give this game a try. If not, then you’ll probably be better off with Robocraft which has a thriving playerbase.
