Metal Reaper Online is a Path of Exile / Diablo style game set in the future with guns. Metal Reaper Online Review

By Omer Altay

Metal Reaper Online is a 3D sci-fi shooter MMORPG with an isometric camera angle set in the year 2043. The game was developed by Korean-based N2 Games, and was originally released in South Korea back in late 2013 and made its way to global beta through JCPlanet on April 29, 2015. The game launched into open beta officially on May 21, 2015. In the simplest sense, Metal Reaper Online is very much like Diablo, except with guns.

Starting Out

Upon logging into Metal Reaper Online for the first time, players are presented with a fairly rudimentary character creation screen with few customization options. There are several hair styles, colors, and a “body shape” slider for female characters, which is simply a boob slider. Not sure why they called it “body shape” when it just refers to a female character's chest. Players don't select their class right away and instead start off as classless “newbies” and must pick a class upon reaching level six. With only a handful of customization options, the character creation leaves a lot to be desired.

After picking a name and entering the game for the first time, players begin their journey in Metal Reaper with a short story-driven tutorial that explains the basics. Things like moving, shooting, equipping items, and such are explained in the tutorial, which only takes about five minutes to complete. One glaring problem with Metal Reaper Online that's evident from the start is the game's poor English translations. Despite being the global English version of the game, the translations are remarkably poor. To the point of hilarity sometimes. Luckily, the game's story isn't exactly the selling point anyway.

Fun, Yet Easy, Gameplay

Fans of action MMORPGs similar to Path of Exile and Diablo should find the core gameplay in Metal Reaper Online enjoyable, as it's basically Diablo with modern day guns. Combat is fast-paced and fluid, and players can mow down hordes of enemies at once with flamethrowers and machine guns, which is oddly satisfying. Players can equip up to three different weapons at once and can quickly rotate between them with the F1-F3 keys or the mouse wheel. The game features Handguns, Rifles, Rocket Launchers, Shotguns, Chainsaws, Heavy Machine Guns, and Flamethrowers. Players can equip three different weapon types or even three rifles if they wish.

It only takes about an hour of play to reach level 6 and pick a job advancement, called branches. The game has a total of five classes, or “branches,” which are: Newbie, Predator, Panzer, Sniper, and Supporter. Each class has their own set of skills, with most classes having 9-10 distinct abilities. Visually speaking, the game looks better than older isometric MMORPGs like Mu Online but still significantly worse than newer titles. One thing I quickly noticed after playing Metal Reaper Online for a bit is that the game is extremely easy. Enemies deal minimal damage and went down quickly. This complete lack of challenge is a bit of a letdown as the core gameplay in Metal Reaper Online is actually quite fun.

Item System

With gameplay similar to Diablo, it shouldn't be a surprise that the item system in Metal Reaper is also similar. Enemies have a chance to drop magic items that vary in rarity and strength. Items with blue names are magic and have better stats than basic equipment. Items with green names indicate that they're a part of a set and provide enhanced stats when worn with matching pieces of that set. Equipment with purple and orange names indicate that they're quite a bit rarer and have better randomized stats than simple magic gear.

Final Verdict – Fair

Despite its dated graphics and poor translations, the core gameplay in Metal Reaper Online is actually quite fun. The game doesn't bring anything new to the table, but fans of Diablo style action MMORPGs may find something to like in Metal Reaper.
