Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds Review

By, Aey Igh

Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, also known as Nexus TK, is a 2D fantasy MMORPG developed by the Korean company KRU Interactive. First released in 1996, it is one of the longest-running and most beloved online games in the world. Over the years, Nexus TK has built a dedicated and passionate fanbase, thanks to its unique blend of traditional Asian mythology, rich storytelling, and engaging gameplay. The game has experienced numerous updates, expansions, and improvements, but its core essence remains unchanged: players are invited to explore an immersive, open-world filled with mystery, adventure, and countless opportunities for self-discovery.

Starting off / Tutorial

Upon launching Nexus TK, players are greeted with a simple character creation interface. They can choose from a variety of hairstyles, colors, and faces to customize their avatar. The game offers four main classes: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, and Poet. Each class has its unique abilities and playstyle, catering to a wide range of player preferences.

Once the character is created, players are dropped into the tutorial zone, where they learn the basics of movement, combat, and interaction with NPCs. This zone is an excellent introduction to the game's mechanics and setting, with helpful NPCs who guide newcomers through various quests. After completing the tutorial, players venture into the main world to begin their adventures.

Graphics / UI

Nexus TK's graphics are a nostalgic homage to the early days of gaming. The 2D isometric perspective and pixel art style will undoubtedly evoke memories of classics like Ultima Online and Diablo. While the visuals may not be cutting-edge, they have an undeniable charm that remains captivating even after hours of play.

The game's user interface is straightforward and functional, albeit a bit dated. Windows for inventory, stats, and skills are easy to navigate, but some players may find the lack of customization options and modern quality-of-life features somewhat limiting. Despite its simplicity, the UI does not detract from the overall experience and may even appeal to those who prefer a more traditional MMO layout.

Progression

Progression in Nexus TK revolves around leveling up, acquiring new gear, and honing one's abilities. Players gain experience points by slaying monsters, completing quests, and participating in various activities. As they level up, they can allocate points to their primary attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Vitality) and learn new skills specific to their chosen class.

One unique aspect of Nexus TK is the emphasis on community and social interactions. Players can join subpaths, which are akin to guilds, each with its own unique abilities, culture, and requirements. This feature encourages players to collaborate, trade, and form meaningful relationships with their fellow adventurers.

Furthermore, Nexus TK also offers a robust crafting system, where players can gather resources and create a wide array of items, including weapons, armor, and consumables. This adds another layer of depth and customization to the game, allowing players to tailor their experience according to their preferences.

Combat / Gameplay

Combat in Nexus TK is a mix of real-time action and tactical decision-making. Players can engage in both PvE (Player vs. Environment) and PvP (Player vs. Player) battles. The game's combat system is relatively simple, with players using their mouse to target enemies and activate skills. However, the strategic depth comes from positioning, skill selection, and teamwork.

Each class has its strengths and weaknesses, and understanding the synergies between different classes is essential for success in challenging encounters. Group play is heavily emphasized, with dungeons and bosses often requiring a balanced team of players with complementary abilities. This focus on cooperation adds a social element to the gameplay, fostering camaraderie and shared experiences within the Nexus TK community.

PvP combat is also a significant aspect of the game, with several modes available for players to test their mettle against one another. From open-world PvP to organized events and tournaments, Nexus TK offers a variety of opportunities for players to prove their skill and earn bragging rights. The competitive nature of the game's PvP scene has attracted a dedicated following, and rivalries between players and subpaths can lead to exhilarating battles and memorable moments.

Final Verdict: Great

Nexus TK: The Kingdom of the Winds is a charming, nostalgic MMORPG that has stood the test of time. Its 2D graphics and old-school gameplay may not appeal to everyone, but for those who appreciate its charm, there is a rich, immersive world to explore. The game's emphasis on community, social interaction, and strategic combat creates an experience that is as rewarding as it is challenging. Keep in mind though, the learning curve here is steep and those who don't appreciate older MMORPGs will likely not enjoy Nexus TK.

While Nexus TK may lack some of the modern quality-of-life features found in contemporary MMOs, it more than compensates with its unique atmosphere and compelling gameplay. With a dedicated fanbase, continuous updates, and a welcoming community, Nexus TK is a hidden gem in the MMORPG genre, offering players a chance to revisit a simpler time in gaming while forging their own path in the Kingdom of the Winds.

Development History / Background:

Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds is the name of the American version of the Korean developed MMORPG Baramue Nara, or Baram for short. Development on the game began in 1993 in the labs of KAIST (Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and it was commercially released three years later in 1996. The North American beta started a year later and launched in 1998.

One of the original developers on Nexus, Jake Song, went on to develop another classic Korean MMORPG, Lineage. Together with the Legend of Mir 2, these three Korean MMORPGs are among the oldest MMORPGs still in service. While Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds has not enjoyed the same level of success as Lineage or Mir 2, it was still an important pioneer of the MMORPG genre.
