Nova Genesis Review

By Toan Layne

Nova Genesis is fantasy/sci-fi themed browser-based MMORPG developed and published by Reality Squared Games, also known R2games, a company known for their free-to-play browser games. The game was released on January 9, 2015 and is also available on Facebook.

Nova Genesis is set in the world of Cerulea, a once peaceful land plunged into chaos when powerful factions started a war to gain absolute power. Only a few brave souls dare to oppose these factions. Players are put in the shoes of one of the brave few who seek to put an end to the power struggle and bring Cerulea back to its once peaceful and harmonious state.

Character Creation

Nova Genesis features a simple character creation screen, much like other browser-based MMORPG’s. The artwork, however, looks pretty good. Players choose from 3 classes with one male and one female pre-made character for each class. After creating and naming their characters, players are dropped right into the game. Like any proper RPG the first order of business is to kill pesky fire demons in a flashback/prologue style tutorial. Large, impossible to miss, golden arrows tell players which buttons to press to attack or move about. The game features classical graphics reminiscent of old school RPGs that players might expect to play on older systems like the Playstation or an old action arcade game. The effects are flashy without being over the top and look good. The background music is good enough but is a bit repetitive and comes across as one track playing throughout the game.

The Battle Begins

Nova Genesis features the same gameplay elements found in typical browser-based MMORPGs including quests, dungeons, and the ever-present auto-path system which “magically” transports players to the next point of interest with a mere click of a button. The game also features a party dungeon system which, as the name implies, allows players to join or create a party with other players to take on different dungeons. This is remarkably similar to games like Monkey King Online and League of Angels.

Combat is turn-based and fairly simple. Players use the QWERT keys to cast spells, launch attacks, or use abilities from their hotbar. During combat, players can chain certain skills together to deal massive amounts of damage, known as Squad Rush Skills. Players are also given a chance to tweak their characters further using a simple skill tree. The choices may be limited but skill trees are rare in browser-based MMORPG’s and definitely gives the game an edge over similar titles. As veteran browser-based players would expect, Nova Genesis also features an auto-combat system. Although unlike other browser-based MMORPG’s, not everything is automated. Characters will continue to attack until a different skill is triggered which lends an element of automation without taking over the game completely.

The blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements allows the game to have cool futuristic weapons called Nova Weapons which can be earned by completing certain main quests. Aside from being eye-candy, these weapons also grant players and their party a variety of buffs, boosts, and ability bonuses that can make them more effective in battle. Nova Weapons can also be upgraded to make them stronger.

The Companions

One of the key areas in the game is acquiring new NPC party members to assist players in battle called Companions. Different party members come with different abilities and attacks that can be used to a player’s advantage during combat. Companions are met as a player progresses through the game. They also automatically join the player’s group when the player reaches certain level milestones. Each companion has their own story background and is best used to mitigate any weaknesses in the player’s initial class choice or to focus the entire party on a specific strategy. For example, focusing more on recruiting damage dealing Companions rather than defensive ones.

Home Sweet Home

Nova Genesis also adds an element of strategy to the mix with Zeniths, home bases necessary for acquiring additional resources in the game. Players need to spend Rubies or Gold to build Zeniths, which in turn produce Gold, Anima, and Phantasma. There’s a limit to how many resources can be stockpiled so resources must be regularly collected much like Farmville and Clash of Clans. Zeniths can also be upgraded to increase their production but won’t produce any resources while upgrading. Thieves will also try to disrupt the Zenith’s resource production. Players must “Smash” the thieves to bring production back to normal levels. Players can also plunder another player’s Zenith which triggers a battle against the player’s Squad. The winner is rewarded 50% of the loser’s resources. Plundering, however, costs gold and becomes more expensive until the daily reset.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

Diamonds are the premium currency in Nova Genesis and are acquired exchanging real money. While players are not required to spend their hard-earned cash, they can make life easier. Diamonds are used to purchase premium items from the cash shop such as equipment and items to speed up cooldowns.

Stepping into the Arena

Players can test the strength of their party in the PvP Arena against other players’ squads. The game also features a Guild Knock Out mode which allows two guilds to fight against each other. Fighters are randomly selected from two opposing guilds to brawl in the Arena. The last man standing wins. Participating in PVP matches rewards players with additional experience points and resources.

Final Verdict - Good

Nova Genesis offers a bit more content than the usual run-of-the-mill browser-based MMORPG. The skill tree, however simple, is a welcome addition and adds a bit of customization. The games graphics and effects, while not impressive, look pretty. The game’s auto-combat system which gives players a choice rather than taking over completely is also a nice touch. The game may not be the best but is great for casual gaming.

  • I wish these browser based MMORPGs from China weren't so pay to win. I remember playing League of Angels for a bit and it was incredibly pay to win. Nova Genesis must be doing something right because it has a pretty large playerbase.

  • DrakeDoesn’tWrite

Gone but not forgotten. Best Team Tournament and Team Dungeons. Unfortunately, bugs languished and Cross Server Matching was pretty horrid.
