Rainbow Saga Key Features

Rainbow Saga is a 2D anime-themed browser MMORPG developed by NGames and published by Game321, a subsidiary of NGames. The game’s open beta went live on December 18, 2014 and can be played through either one of the publisher’s websites in any browser with Adobe Flash Player Installed.
The Colorful World of Troonmill
Rainbow Saga is set in the mythical town of Troonmill where players take on the role of the Chosen One, tasked with saving the princess who was kidnapped by the Demon King—which oddly enough, reminds me of Super Mario Bros. The game features cute chibi-style anime characters in a vibrant and colorful 2D cartoony world. The presentation is nearly identical to Maple Story, which in my opinion, never really goes out of style and holds a certain charm to it, but might not be everyone’s cup of tea. I, for one, have no problems with it. The animations are very fluid and the effects are spot on. The background music is lively and upbeat but doesn’t change along with the environment. During boss fights, for example, you would expect the music to change to something more ominous or heart-pounding to make things more exciting. Unfortunately, the music pretty much stays the same throughout most of the game.
The Chosen One
Players start the game by choosing their characters gender. Unlike most MMORPG’s, players choose their class once they hit level 10 so they must pick between two classes at the start. Unsurprisingly, the game lacks any character customization feature, which is usually the case in most browser games so I won’t be holding it against Rainbow Saga. However, a few hair types and hair color options wouldn’t have been amiss either. After picking their gender, players are transported to an instanced tutorial where they are taught the basics of movement and combat, which are pretty simple. The arrow keys are used to move around and the Space key to jump. The A to H keys are used to trigger skills and attacks, and the Q to Y keys are used for consumables like potions. Players find the kidnapped princess at the end of the instance. Unfortunately, the Demon King manages to spirit her away, leaving players to fight their very first boss battle against one of his loyal henchmen. Defeating the boss completes the instance and transports players to the starting zone.
Maple Lane
Alas, everything that happened seems to only be a dream. Players wake up in Maple Lane (I wonder where they got name that from?) and introduce themselves to a talking cat. This is the part where players key in their game name. The dialog box features a random button if you’re feeling lazy, which often results in some pretty interesting name combinations. From this point on the game pretty much plays like most MMORPG’s. NPC’s send players on quests that reward them with Gold, EXP, and items. The game also has an auto-path feature that players can turn on by pressing Enter. It's useful if you get lost or are just feeling particularly lazy.
The Guardian Trial
The first set of quests is known as the Guardian Trial, and once completed players should be level 10, ready to choose their class. Players take a quick test to determine their recommended class, similar to a much shorter version of Ragnarok Online’s class quiz. This may help undecided players with choosing but ultimately has no bearing on the game. Players are free to choose their class regardless of what they score in the quiz.
After choosing their class, the game again proceeds like any other MMORPG. And, like any standard MMORPG, Rainbow Saga also features, item upgrades, enhancements, pets, mounts, instanced dungeons, as well as minor features like daily quizes and monster hunting events—an impressive lineup of features considering that the game is browser-based. These features are progressively unlocked by reaching level requirements. Enhancing items, for example, requires players to be at least level 15.
Making Progress
Progressing through Rainbow Saga is pretty easy, considering that I got my character from level 1 to 15 in under 15 minutes. At level 11 and onwards players start earning stats and skill points as they level up. Stats are automatically assigned while skill points need to be manually distributed in the skill tree. The number of skills available, however, isn’t really that impressive. With six available skill slots and a level 80 cap, players can max out almost all the available skills, leaving little room for diversity.
Taking Out the Competition
Players who get tired of killing monsters can challenge other players in the Arena and test out their skills against more seasoned opponents. Players can join either solo or team-based arenas with five players on each side. In team battles, teams are balanced out according to their levels. Unfortunately, a team can easily gang up on their opponent’s weakest players to quickly take them out of the equation. Although, it is a double-edged sword, since the opposing team can just as easily employ the same strategy. Players who participate in arena matches are rewarded with honor points that they can exchange for rare items, as well as arena points that determine their overall PVP ranking.
Rainbow Saga also features a PVP option called Territory Scramble, a bi-weekly event where opposing clans battle it out for control of seven territories. Players must capture and hold as many territories as they can during the specified time limit. Rewards are given out to each clan member depending on the number of territories their clan manages to hold. Players who participate in the scramble may also gain Conquest Points that they can exchange for items and gear.
Going Shopping
Like most free-to-play games, Rainbow Saga offers premium items via the in-game cash shop, which seems to be pretty balanced. The shop contains pets, costumes, gold, and gems for enhancing gear. There are no overpowered premium weapons on sale, which is a good thing. Personally, I think the costumes are kind of cute. Unfortunately, I’m not the type of player who buys premium items.
The Final Verdict - Good
Rainbow Saga feels like a Maple Story clone right off the bat, although a pretty good one all things considered. The game offers fun and intuitive gameplay coupled with a simple control scheme. It’s also packed with features, which is a rarity in the world of browser-based games. The cutesy cartoony 2D graphics might not be for everyone though. Personally, I’d recommend this game to players looking for an alternative to Maple Story but also, as a former Maple Story player, I’d have to say that Rainbow Saga comes close but not quite close enough to give Nexon a run for its money.

Rainbow Saga is a browser based MMO and will run smoothly on practically any PC. The game was tested and works well on Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox and Chrome. Any modern web-browser should run the game smoothly.
