Rohan: Blood Feud Review

By, Marc Marasigan

Rohan: Blood Feud is a free-to-play fantasy-themed 3D MMORPG developed and published by PlayWith Interactive, formerly known as YNK Interactive. The game was officially launched on May 28, 2008 and is an English version of the Korean MMORPG, Rohan Online. The game also has versions made for Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, and Indonesia.

The World of Rohan

Rohan: Blood Feud is set in the mythical medieval world of Rohan. Rohan’s creator, a powerful god named Ohn, has suddenly disappeared forcing the lower gods to take drastic measures to bring him back, including exterminating all the races. Players are thrust into the middle of a chaotic world where once docile animals, plants, and fairies have suddenly turned into dangerous monsters and have begun to wage war on Rohan’s inhabitants. The game’s graphics would have been considered great when it was first released, but, as of now, it looks a bit dated. The game world itself is massive with zones ranging from dark caves, lush green forests, ancient ruins, and bustling cities on a massive scale. The game’s soundtrack however is exceptional and gives off a distinctly high-fantasy-ish vibe using classical/orchestra music.

Getting Started

Like most MMORPG’s, players start the game by creating their characters. Creating one in Rohan: Blood Feud is a fairly simple affair, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Most modern MMORPG’s usually try to make their character creation process as in-depth as possible, well, Rohan falls fairly short in this aspect. Aside from having race-locked classes, the game customization options are limited to face type, hair type, and hair color. Definitely a huge point against the game.

Learning Has Its Benefits

Once players have created their characters, which really shouldn’t take more than a minute, they are then given the option to start in the tutorial zone, or one of the starting cities. I highly recommend going through the tutorial since it’s an easy way to get to level 10. Plus, completing the tutorial quests rewards players with gear that will be a big help in the early stages of the game. The entire tutorial, however, takes around 10-15 minutes to complete, which for me, is an incredibly long time to spend running around following instructions on things I can do in my sleep. But again, the rewards are well-worth it.

Here We Go Again

Rohan: Blood Feud follows the same formula that countless MMORPG’s have gone with. Players complete the typical kill and collect quests, which will have players killing 10 or more mobs, while progressing from one zone to another. I’m the type of gamer who absolutely hates grinding and 10 mobs kind of borders on grinding for me. Add to that the fact that the quests are level-based which inevitably requires players to grind it out when they get stuck in between levels with no available quests. Fortunately, the game features a Monster Kill or "M. Kill: system that rewards players with bonus EXP upon killing a certain number of mobs. This lessens between-level grinding by a bit, but still feels a bit tedious if you ask me. Increasing experience gains would have been a better approach in my opinion.

Rohan’s progression and skill system is also pretty much standard fare. Players gain stat and skill points when they level up. These points can then be distributed however they like. It’s worth mentioning, however, that the game features a fairly large skill tree that allows players to create a variety of builds to suit their play style or their role in the party. Aside from the typical quests, the game also features pretty much everything found in a standard MMORPG including crafting, pets, mounts, and dungeons.

Sweet Revenge

Rohan: Blood Feud is a heavily PVP-oriented where players can easily flag themselves for PK and go on a killing spree once they’ve reached level 30. The game even features a unique race adept at assassinations and can gain experience by killing other players instead of completing quests. Killing other players, however, doesn’t come without consequences. For one thing, getting PKed may result in the loss of experience as well as equipment. For another, killing a player is counted against the PK limit. Players who go over the limit are tagged as Murderers and can be killed without any penalties. They will also be attacked by city guards.

The game also features a Vengeance system which allows players to keep track of the last 50 players who killed them and exact revenge by instantly teleporting to their location, along with any party members who decide to tag along. While it might be fun, not to mention overly satisfying, to give another player a well-deserved beat-down, imagine being on the receiving end. Players are as likely to be the killer as the killed, and trust me it doesn’t seem all that fun when a sore-loser and his gang of bullies might be looming around the corner.

Aside from PK-ing players can also join guilds and battle it out with other guilds for control of towns, which they can levy taxes from. Players can also join arenas which don't differ much outside PKing.

Item Mall

Rohan: Blood Feud generates revenue through microtransactions from the browser-based item mall. The items can be exchanged either for RPs or E-cash, both of which can be bought using real world cash. The item mall contains the usual collection of premium items, including boosts, cosmetic costumes, pets, mounts, and crafting materials. So far, there are no overpowered items, weapons, or gear, and everything seems pretty balanced. The game also offers a website dedicated to player-to-player transactions where they can buy and sell in-game goods safely and securely.

The Final Verdict - Good

Rohan: Blood Feud is pretty much your standard fare MMORPG with a heavy focus on PVP. While the typical MMORPG formula has definitely worked and actually still works for most MMORPGs, Rohan: Blood Feud doesn’t really offer anything to help it stand out from similar PVP-centered games like Ultima Online. The Vegeance system is a nice touch although some would argue that it’s prone to abuse. The grinding, however, is what I can’t stand. If you’re the type of player who has no problem repeatedly killing things then by all means give this game a shot. If it’s not your cup of tea, well, there are other free-to-play MMORPG’s out there that are worth checking out.
