CroNix Review

By, Marc Marasigan

CroNix is a free-to-play third-person 3D MOBA, or more specifically a MOSA (Muliplayer Online Strategic Action), according to the game’s developers. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where teams of players engage in fast-paced and strategic action combat to complete map objectives. The game’s graphics are good: the environments are detailed, the character models properly textured and animated, and the effects pleasing to the eye. Nothing ground-breaking but not too terrible either. Same goes with the audio.

Learning the Ropes

The first time players log-in to the game they are given the option to go through a quick in-game tutorial, that walks players through the basics of movement, combat, tonics, and interacting with objects, which is basically everything you need to know about the game. The tutorial only takes around 5 minutes to complete and, as tempting as it is to just skip the tutorial and jump right in to the action, I would recommend completing it even if it’s just for the reward. Players can access the tutorial at any time through the lobby menu but only the first run-through will give a reward.

The Waiting Game

Like most lobby-based MMOs, CroNix features a matchmaking system which automatically sets a player up with other players looking to play. Unfortunately, due to the game’s exceedingly low playerbase, it takes absolutely forever to get into a game. My first game had me waiting twenty minutes to be matched with other players. I’m a patient guy but twenty minutes is definitely going overboard. Not that I had a choice, since I needed to play the game to review it. Other gamers might not be so forgiving.

Making The Choice

Players start a match by choosing from a diverse roster of characters, each with their own roles in combat. They can also change characters when they die to counter the opposing team’s strategy. Unfortunately, character selection is on a first come, first served basis and unless you’re the first team member to enter the match or you’ve played long enough to unlock other characters you’ll probably be left with only one or two choices, and more often than not, end up as Support. Unless you’re the type of player that likes Support roles, this can be a bit frustrating. It also becomes a problem when you take into account the fact that Properties, CroNix’s version of Perks from Call of Duty, are character-specific. So unless your teammate decides to finally let go of the only character you’ve invested in, you’ll be stuck with whatever character is currently available.

Game On!

Before The Big Patch was implemented, which essentially changed the whole game, CroNix featured three game modes: Survival, Brawl, and Domination. Currently there are only two playable modes, Raid and Elimination. In Raid two teams of five players battle it out in a unique mix of Domination and Capture the Flag scenarios. Two teams start out with a set number of points and then try to capture and hold the opposing team’s control points which results in the opposing team losing points until their control point is reclaimed. A player can also pick up a power cell from the center of the map and carry it to their team’s control center to gain points. The first team to run out of points loses the match. In Elimination, a team of five players goes up against a team of five AI’s in a classic deathmatch scenario. The first team to die a certain number of times loses. Scores and results, however, are not recorded in Elimination matches.

CroNix uses a control scheme similar to FPS games, which works really well with the game’s action-combat nature. The WASD keys are used to move while left-click, right-click, Q, E, and spacebar are used to trigger abilities. The F key is used to trigger the characters ultimate skill once it’s powered up and the 1-4 keys are used to activate temporary buffs called Tonics. Personally, the controls felt natural to me but can feel a bit awkward for people used to the 1-4 and Q-R keys typically used in most MOBAs. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to change the keybindings. Combat in the game is intense and fast-paced where players can easily be killed within seconds of respawning. Luckily CroNix players aren’t too big on spawn-camping. Pre Big Patch, the game had a few balance issues with melee characters almost always becoming cannon fodder for ranged characters. The Big Patch made a few adjustments to even out the playing field so players can finally enjoy playing as both character types.

Money Matters

CroNix offers one in-game shop for both premium and non-premium items. Players can purchase Tonics and unlock characters from the in-game shop using Seed, the main game currency. The shop also contains the typical assortment of premium items such as premium bundles as well as EXP and Seed boosters which can be purchased using real-world cash. No overpowered items, weapons, or gear are sold in the shop which is always a good thing.

Final Verdict – Good

CroNix’s gameplay is fun, intense, action-packed, and reminds me a lot of Nosgoth and Smite but leaning more towards Smite gameplay-wise. The game is surprisingly well-made with lots of potential and is actually very enjoyable although definitely not for the more hardcore players. The game, however, is in desperate need of more game modes for it to attract more players. Attracting more players should, in turn, solve the game’s ridiculously long matchmaking times, a serious problem which could ultimately lead to CroNix's downfall.
